I have a 86 Glastron x-19 bow-rider. It runs fine most of the time... only leaned while I raised the trim way up but it leaned alarmingly hard, lol I pointed it towards the shore and then started inspecting for water leaks. then thought maybe something happened to the gimbal and my outdrive was off camber(just a brief WTF moment:rolleyes:). when I cut throttle It leveled out. Never did it again like that.

now i know its torque related(no deformity in the hull) and my trim tab is not set(it steers easier left). Why dose the trim tab have anything to do with listing? It forces the outdrive left or right not like a barrel roll... Im thinking rudder not ailerons?

I was plowing hard trying to see how big a wake it would through, I just never imagined it would torque that hard. I mean If I had turned hard right I probably could have taken water over the rails. Ive never had a V hull this was actually my fist time in a V hull, only been on tri hulls, toons and flat bottoms.

Can someone explain things to me a little, I'm kinda a Physics nerd maybe I'm just underestimating the forces here?

your boat's foam could be full of water.

Hitting a wake at a slight angle can do strange thing's. think about the angle of the wake,hight,ect. If ya are cutting something with a knife,and the knife only has the angle on one side it gets hard to keep it cutting straight,same princable,but you probbaly hit it at an angle.
Also its an 86 ,my 85 runs/drives great,but upon investigation,found the floor/transom/stringers/foam saturated wet waterlogged.
Restoring as we speak. Look over what ya got for any soft spots/wet areas. Check out the restoration threads ect.
Dont give up on it,things can be repaired.

It only did it the one time, We were out for about 4 hrs and it did really well. I Replaced parts of the floor already. I will have to do the floor and stingers But it will last the season transom and foam are good. That's a good point with the wake but I don't think that's what it was I was off by myself on a quiet part of the lake.

I guess what I want to understand is how the trim tab helps with listing, And the relationship between trim settings and roll. I guess its like the caster angle for a car?

When you say "trim tab" are you referring to the outdrive and whether it's trimmed up/down ? or do you have trim tabs on the boat??
A V hull will lean into a turn and lean into the wind. So lets say you were turning to port, and a strong wind was blowing into the port side, the boat would lean noticeably - if you also hit a wake at an angle at that same time, well that would get your attention :)

That's it then! there was a very strong wind on my port right at that moment and I was just getting into a turn, with the bow way up in the air. I didn't know it would lean INTO the wind I thought it would be opposite. Why? when you blow on something it leans with the wind?

By trim tab I mean the fin on the bottom of the cavitation plate just above the prop. Supposed to counter steering torque, but in a lot of post about listing I see People ask if there trim tab is adjusted. Do I have the terminology mixed up?

The best explanation I've found is that the wind is trying to blow the boat off course, so to compensate you will turn the wheel into the wind - so in effect you are now turning, and the boat will list into the turn. There are other, more complicated :( explanations.

Re the "tabs", it sounds like you have a hydrofoil attached to the anti-cavitation plate? Trim tabs would be small tabs located at the bottom outer edges of the transom.

That makes sense, I did some research... lots of theories out there. I do have a hydrofoil, but this is what I'm talking about.

That's why I was confused.

Thanks for helping me understand. Now I can avoid that situation, or at least be prepared. It wont freak me out now lol

Yes that is also referred to as a trim tab and it can be adjusted if your boat has a tendency to steer port/starboard, but I don't think it played a role in your scary list.

also, on a deep V, if the bow is trimmed low, it can catch and veer the boat sharply one side or the other. This is a warning you get with adjustable trim tabs. I recently got a deep v boat and experienced it for the first time; it was quite alarming.

If it doesn't happen again it may have been a freak catch of the wake you were crossing, possibly with unbalanced load (ie your passengers but I recommend against referring to your wife as "an unbalanced load" or you may get a hard left yourself). If it happens a lot look at your motor being trimmed down too far.

Some boats you start your hole shot trimmed down but raise as you fall onto the plane so not to dig in and veer.

LMAO ... I just quietly moved the ice chest, luggage and anchor to my side of the boat. I don't think she noticed what i was doing :tape:
