If it is not a coil breaking down, it could be a spark plug wire leaking to ground. This usually happens under the mag. plate

little thing keeps missing

motor is, i think, a 1965 9.5 sportwin.
model: 9222m serial:J07422.
i bought this second hand have no idea of history.
i've replaced water pump, plugs with jc4's(what dealer sugested) motor will crank easy. rev up nicly but every now and then (like evry 2-4 seconds) sometimes at high rev it misses. back it off to half throttle and it's fine. if i try to open it up it starts to miss. ive also adjusted the points to .020, plugs at .030. the coils dont look new but the insulation looks good, no cracking.
she cranks easy, pee's like a champ, and after 10 min. of running i can hold my hand on the flywheel for more than 5 seconds. im running a 40:1 mix. motor's on a light 13ft modified v. i just know if i could fix the missing, and tune the darn thing it would make the boat go quite nicely.
thanks for your help
Garrett

Re: little thing keeps missing

ok. i found a website that sells part for the ignition for my motor. ive decided to order their piont condencer tuneup kit, seems like $20 well spent. im also gona replace the plug wires. after running the motor and pulling the plug wires, one at a time, i've figured out that its the top cylinder thats not firing sometimes. i checked the compresion and the top is at 98 the bottom is at 100(+-).
while im waiting im gona attempt to clean and retune the carb.
any input is greatly appreciated.
Garrett

Sounds like a great plan. You might want to pick up a good manual (hint hint). Save you time and money down the road.

Hi Garrett,
I fought a similar sounding problem for months. That little thing that looks like a condenser fixed mine.....and it may fix yours.
In sunny Australia, that kit cost me $65.you got out of it good for only 20 bucks.
Good luck.
When fireman 57 talks, the whole world should listen.

Another thing to check - the kill button wiring on those 9.5s has a bit of a route to travel and I've seen a few that have had the insulation rubbed off the wires resulting in an intermittent short as the vibration of the motor bounces the wires around...

- Scott

Re: little thing keeps missing

after waiting neerly a week still no book and my parts came so i went on.
got evrything switched out correctly, new points, condencers, plugs, wires, set points to .020. plugs at .030. seems runs a heck of alot better except still misses at low idle. also you have to keep the motor choked in order for it to run. i have new gas. i replaced the gas tank, all lines including primer bulb, all the conections. im assuming my next job should be a carb teardown and clean. any input????????
thanks for all the advice.

Re: little thing keeps missing

In the absence of the REAL experts, let me offer you some advice..
A gasket kit and clean/adjust will do the carby wonders.Be sure...absolutely sure your float is adjusted correctly for your engine.
Then make sure your low speed/idle screw is adjusted properly. {you have got a manual ?? }
When you pick up your carby kit,get one for the fuel pump as well. It's only a few bucks more, and at the end of the day,it will have your boat going at it's most efficient.
If the manual 'aint come yet,go borrow one from the library.Spend some time just leafing through it.The more you read, the smarter you get !!
Good luck.

Re: little thing keeps missing

thanks for the info. ive now lost all faith in my local dealer, they swore to me it was a 64' and they wanted like $200 to do what i did this week end. also they can, or will only orderindividual gaskets or parts. where can i get a complete kit? if i piece it together a minimal kit would be $40+shipping. theres gota be a better option. id like to replace a much as possible for the money while i've got it torn down.
thanks again for all the help!

Re: little thing keeps missing

I'm sure there is another dealer close by that will treat you right. I don't know for sure but that also might be the only way he can get these parts for you. Try doing a search for your parts here at iboats. Top of the page on the left.

Re: little thing keeps missing

Glad that did the trick. Let us know what happens. If you lift the tiller handle up to expose the gears you will be able to disengage the gears. You will need to turn this wherever you need to and then drop it back into the proper gear on the fixed part of the tiller going back to the engine.

Re: little thing keeps missing

went to lake and boy did it run. got my 13' boat on a plane. i ran it for about an hour or so no problems coughs or anything untill i ran into to some cudzue(florida's freshwater pest.)
im cant exspress how happy i am with this thing. and none of it would have happened withought the assistance ive gotten here.
thanks a bunch!!
when i tilt my tiller ahndle up the gears don't disengage so i can adjust.
the only thing i can come up with is to dissasemble the housing and see if i can get a proper allignment that way then reassemble the section. unfortunatly my manual is no help. if i wanted to rebuild the motor it would be great, i guess they couldnt sqeeze it all in one book.
thanks again guys, and any help on mmy pressent issue would be appreciated.
Garrett

Re: little thing keeps missing

That's the kind of things that we like to hear. If you look closely at the gears on the handle you should be able to figure out a way to tackle this without tearing everything apart. Does your handle fold all the way back? If it doesn't stare at it for a couple of beers and you should be able to figure something out. If not I would start a new thread on this subject as the original problem has been fixed.
