OK...the live well drain is on top and goes out of the boat. (1986 Bass Boat). The fill is on the bottom. How is this going to drain when in or out of the water? I get the over flow idea but not the complete draining of the live well. What am I missing? Thanks.

If you well works like mine did then here we go.....there should be a pump typically attatched to the transom area for drawing water to fill the well. As the well gets full the overflow drains the excess water out. There should be a valve on the fill line, whether attatched at the pump or inline or at the point of entry on the tank all depends on the manufacturer. If the valve is turned one way the pump fills only, if the valve is turned the other way it drains back thru the fill line without the pump running. The valve controls fill only or drain. That is the way mine have worked in the past...see if your is not the same. Good luck

There is a pump that draws in water from the back of the boat to the live wells (2). I don't see a valve, but I like that idea and will install them.

I'm presently fashioning a live well setup in my boat project. And I am using a live well thru-hull Rule pump to supply my live well via a top mounted spray bar to both fill the live well and aerate it along the way. And the drain has a "stand pipe" fitted to the level I want the live well too before the level flows back out the top of the stand pipe through the transom to the lake/river water again. So unless I turn on the pump, the live well will never fill. And if I want the live well to empty, I remove the stand pipe and it will empty to the lake level on the hull or completely empty when out of the water. A simple easy setup that uses very little parts and accomplishes the live well capabilities nicely with fresh water via a live well timer circuit I've built... JMHO!
