live well pump?

I have recently purchased a 1989 19' grumman. I have made sure that everything works except what I believe to be the live well pump. I have attached a picture of the pump and hoses. It is located at the transom, under the decking. Another question is how does this arrangement keep water from coming into the live well when not in use?

Is there a live well plug in your live well? That should stop the flow of water coming in...

The intake fitting on the transom is probably below the water line, whereas the corresponding live well fitting is probably above the water line.
