I am new to boating and need some advice.
I would like to build a livewell for my jon boat out of a cooler.
I have been looking at threads and I have not seen one that talks about a system that takes water in and out.
I found this Johnson Complete Live Well Aerator System/ basspirator II but I am not sure if it will do what I want to build.
Any advice is well appreciated. Some pictures are also very welcome and nice.
Thanks

Overkill.

You'll need a water inlet so, on a jon boat, I'd use the transom plug hole. Get a Tsunami 500gph at $25 like this one,10ft of 3/4" bilge hose, a $5 spray head here, a couple of thru-hull fittings of the appropriate size like that and some PVC tubing and elbow to make the removable overflow/drain tube.

Hope this help (and sorry for the crappy drawing!)

Re: Livewell question

It depends on how and where its used, the pump will work just fine through hull then to the tank with a provided strainer on the out side of the transom and a adjustable spray head for better aeration in the tank and then a the drain back to the bilge or another through hull fitting, or yes it can also be used as a close circuit system. But you have just about all the parts you need in a nice kit.

Re: Livewell question

New to boating? Get any size cooler (smaller for bait, BIGGER for a livewell) with a screw type drain and plug and a D-cell or 12v aerator. Very simle and cheap. Even the D cell batteries will last me a few FULL days in my "minnow bucket" (20qt cooler). A 12v with clip on leads for a battery is even better.

I was going to build the same thing but decided it wasn't worth the set up time. You can even build framed screen to keep the bigger fish out of your bait. Drain out some water a couple time during the day and put some fresh back in. Or for minnows just toss in some ice during warm weather.

Re: Livewell question

If you're using a cooler, which is inherently portable, you don't want inlet and outlet tubes. Fill it with lake/river water and throw a aerator in there. Much cheaper and easier. Dump the water overboard after putting your fish on a stringer.
