opening day for lobster in san diego is comming up Oct.4th. Been lobstering many times while scuba diving but never hoop netting from a boat. Been spending the last couple weeks setting up my bayliner trophy for some offshore lobster hunts when oct. rolls around. My problem is i have the boat have all my hoop nets ready but dont know any good locations to set my string. Does anyone know a web site or the best place to get some knowledge on some some good spots here in sd? maybe a local forum? tryin to find a websites with some lats and long so i can have a good season...

out here in Boston and New England waters, I know lobstermen are very territorial and don't like to give ANY info at all... i'm sure you're only going to be catching a few lobsters here and there but i wouldn't be surprised if you get a cold shoulder from some people..

when I dive for lobsters, I only go to area's with a rocky bottom. the gulf of maine lobsters may be a little different from your lobsters out there in CA, but i'm sure they hide out on rocks.

are you going to try the hoop netting this year? i've never heard of that

Im also a avid diver and have spent time hunting lobster by hand here in sd. Rocky areas are hands down the best places to hunt. all the places a ususally go are not accessable by vessel. I know what you mean about people not wanting to share information. I just dont want to be out there burning fuel in the dark.

Hoop-netting is a craze that is blowing up here in so cal. Gonna try it for the first time this season. Heard its a ton of fun...

Its just that easy.....Put a good smelly mackrel in the net and send her on her way. The net lays flat on the bottom and you have to check the nets ever 15-20 min. when you pull in the pot you have to gather line like hell so they dont swim out....

Went out last night for the first time. Got about 25 shorties and a couple keepers. lots of fun though. About 30 -50 feet of water off ocean beach poer in san diego....yum
