Location of onboard charger

I purchased an onboard battery charger and am trying to determine the best place to install it. The charger is a ProMariner ProSport12. My boat is a 2006Cobalt 246.

The instructions say to mount the unit "in a location that allows for free air ventilation with a minimum of 8 inches of clear unobstructed space around and in front of the charger." There is no place in the engine compartment that I can locate the charger that will satisfy this requirement and also allow the cables to reach the batteries and for easy access for me. There is a storage compartment in front of the engine compartment that shares a common fiberglass wall with the engine compartment. This is where the battery switch is also located. Is there any reason I cannot locate the unit inside this compartment and drill holes in the fiberglass wall for the cables?

Thanks

Re: Location of onboard charger

Sure you can mount it there. Although fiberglass isn't the best for heat transfer and dissapation. Also assuming that you have access to the negative bus in that compartment you can wire the charger right to the 1 and 2 batt posts accordingly.

One other thing to remember, you'll want to keep the boat plugged in. So where ever you mount it remember that the extension cord will have to be brought there. On my boat I used a remote 110volt kit, and my plug for my extension cord is located up front on my casting deck. This way when trailered I can plug the boat it without having to crawl into it. Just a thought.

Good luck
