Im sure you can find or make a cap that locks on, but why not get some of that 'cash for clunkers" engine treatment that melts down the engine when added to gas and fix them up some for the next time. Until then keep you good gas hidden.

Re: Lockable fuel tank

I had someone stealing my tractor gas one time. I just put ten gallons of water in the tank. Found the car about 100 feet from the end of the driveway the next morning. He had already gotten most of the water out for me.

The engine killer, sodium silicate, is used by replacing the oil with it, and draining the coolant. At about 400 degrees, it turns to glass, plugging up everything, including the oil passages, making the block not even usable for a core.

Depending on the style of the filler cap you might be able to use a chain or cable to lock the cap in place. The newer caps look to have fingers, for lack of a better description, on the top of them. Put a chain through the fingers and lock it around the handle. If the fingers are sturdy enough you may be able to drill through one and epoxy an eye bolt to it.

That's disturbing. Stealing gas is one thing but it sounds like somebody has your number. Most folks steal something and then split, this weasel is sticking around risking capture just to cause you grief. No amount of fancy locking gizmos will stop somebody like that and even if it did, they'd just find something else to damage.

Report it.
Remove the tanks and/or beef up security.

Thanks for the reply...dont think someone is after me specifically...they got me and my adjacent neighboors at the same time.

BTW...I saw your local as being NW Miss...may I ask where...I'm from the small town of Charleston between Batesville and Grenada...in Ocala FL for the past 22 years
thanks again

I like the idea of putting water in there with some gasoline added to make it smell right.

i do beleive it is time to start fillin the boat up with diesel:D
i have the same tank, and it is not easy. You can try chaining it thru the handle, drilling a hole where the cap screwes onto the tank, and locking the cap to the tank with a trailer lock of sorts. Im sure someone will come up with what to do to the other 2 holes. ;)

6 Gallons? Take it out of the boat?

Quick connects on the fuel gauge sender and fuel line to the engine.

I kinda like the diesel idea. Water will just make it stall, diesel may blow there head gaskets out.

Attach one of these to the filler cap.

Re: Lockable fuel tank

I'm with CN Spots. If their primary intent was to steal gas, they wouldn't bother refilling it with water unless they also intended to do some harm. So substituting the gas with other liquids might not have the desired effect if it's simply a prank.

If it were mine, I'd get in the habit of storing the tank elsewhere and hope they tired of it quickly so I could go back to leaving it out.

If I was going to add anything to the tank to mess them up, I'd mix in a large percentage of my 25% nitromethane RC fuel. That's going to leave a mark!

At $35 a gallon for that stuff, diesel is cheaper ;)

>diesel is cheaper

So is water but what I'd be looking for is maximum effect. Plus, I have gallons of it sitting around anyway. Besides, you don't need to FILL the tank, just enough to get their attention...

BTW- I think the effects of diesel fuel in a gasoline engine are being overstated. In my experience, they just blow smoke or stumble and die without damaging anything more than a fuel system cleaning can solve.

Re: Lockable fuel tank

I have seen diesel blow head gaskets, but most common I have ever seen was the ignition was so slow and far off it stripped a timing belt. Fixible if you don't have a zero tolerance engine, but if you do....bad luck. And even if it does no damage it is almost impossible to start once diesel is in the cylinder until it is all removed.

Sugar is insoluable in gasoline.

Diesel is less volatile than gasoline. Under normal gas engine compression and spark- no big deal.

How small is your boat?
Any way to build a housing around your tank and put a hinged door with padlock on it?
