Locked Steering ?!? (Pictures Added)

Hey
I am new to the forum; I recently took on a project boat that was given to me by my father. It is a 1981 Beachcraft with an inboard outboard.
This boat was last used 4 years ago; I have the engine up and running great.
My problem is the steering. When it was last used the steering locked up and would not turn at all. There was no investigation to the problem we just hauled it out of the water and parked it.

I have checked the cable at both ends it seams to be free of rust or corrosion. Could this be the outdrive needs to be oiled or greased?
I will post the exact model, motor and outboard name as soon as I get home.
Any ideas where I should start would be great.

welcome to iboats ...

it could just be the rotary steering unit behind the steering wheel ...
can you move the sterndrive unit by hand ? does the steering wheel move with it ? if its locked .. remove the steering cable at the steering arm to the drive and see if you can move the drive when its disconnected ..
iboats offers the rotary steering unit. get the no feed back from what i hear .

thanks for the quick reply, glad to see this is an active forum.

No you can not move the stern drive manually. I will disconnect the steering cable at the steering arm tonight and see what happens. I think I will also snap a few digital pictures.

Well not sure if you can tell or not but in the second picture we have snapped all the bolts that hold the cover on.
I am in desperate need of some advide, possibly a boat mechanic

You might want to try the pictures again.
