OK, Working on the boat for a week or two. J115TLERC. 20 foot huricane deck boat(flat bottom) New fuel pump(pluse on the side of the motor,VRO removed) Ran good after pump installed, 24MPH @ 5400 rpm. Went out today 3300 RPM WOT. stopped on the lake to have a look. Just idled for about 5 minutes and it quit the motor would not turn. starter tried but would not turn the motor. So i took out all the plugs the lower port side was mashed in.(ROD?) Hit by piston i guess. I used a screwdriver to turn the motor and got it unlocked. Hit the starter and it turned over. I put the 3 plugs back in that were ok and started it up. It did some popping with no plug but ran back to the dock about 1/4 mile. NOW the big question. How much more damage did i do running on 3 cylinders? It still ran at the dock till i shut it off.

The damage was already done before you ran it on three cyls. Pull the cyl head and see what it looks like. By the way NEVER run a mtr with a spark plug out unless you have good fire insurance.

I did ground the plug wire to the block with a jumper wire, so it didn't spark. Not sure if that would help but i gave it a shot. I'll pull the head this week to see what i need to buy. Thanks for the reply. I did get the OMC manual for it.

Smart man, both for the plug grounding and the OMC manual.

Re: Locked up? for a minute...

Thanks boobie, i learned all that here. I just got my first boat last august so read for a couple hours here every night trying to learn about these outboards. I have worked on cars for 40 years and i know that is not an outboard. But i have turned a lot of bolts so i feel i can get the job done with help from all the great people here. i will keep up with this post till i hear it purr like a kitten again. thanks again, Denny

ok, the motor is junk. got a groove top (about 1/4'' wide / 0030-0040- deep) to bottom in one cylinder, looks like something got sucked into the intake and beat on the piston. the piston and the head are all beat up. not got to the crank yet but there is slop in the bad piston, bearing spun? Be looking for another motor.

Also what powerheads will fit the lower unit on outboard

J115TLERC

Thanks for the input

If you do replace the P/H, be sure to find out what caused this one to go.
