Locked up

I was running along about 3000 rpm and I heard a clunk clunk clunk and the engine died. It would not turn over anymore. Not a hard thud from the starter like the motor is locked just wont turn
over. The oil monitor for the outdrive is and has been full. The engine oil is clean and full. It had oil pressure and was not running hot. This was the first time out since I installed my new stainless
prop but I don't see how that could be a factor. After we got it out of the water the prop turns free and it locks properly in forward and reverse. I am going to pull the top cap and inspect the bearings there and check the drive oil in the morning but was wondering if you guys had any thoughts. I have had the thought the last few times out it seemed a little louder back there than normal and when turning I have been hearing what I thought was the prop cavitating and it has never done that before. I'm guessing the u-joints are shot but I didn't know if that would lock everything up. I
had the gimbal and all the bellows changed last winter. They did find a bad shaft and bearing under the top cap when they did that so maybe that was a sign of imminent upper failure to come.

Re: Locked up

Well I couldn't wait. I took the top cover off and read it like a book. Oil smelled nasty and was shiny with pieces floating on top of the bearing. Felt of the vertical drive gear and found multiple teeth broken. I guess now I gotta decide fix or replace. Any thoughts ?

Re: Locked up

I'd get an SEI replacement drive. Not just the upper, the shrapnel is all through the drive so get both halves.
