Locking the motor down for the CNC P/T, Help!

Hello all, instead of re-doing the stock power trim on my motor (1980 90HP Inline 6) I have decided to buy a CNC Power trim unit.

My question is, how do i get the motor to lock in position without the trim cylinders on there? Is there a pin it locks into at full down trim? I cant seem to find a manual switch to hold the motor up if the P/T ever dies.

Mneumonic, To "lock the motor fully up" there was a "dog-ear" shaped of steel on each side of the tilt bracket on my 1977 merc. They tend to break off or corrode, after many years. It had it's own grease fitting, and maybe you can use that to trace it down. You can either replace it or use the "old two - by - six in the bracket trick".

The Power T/T units did not have a "lock down" capability. There was a lock down lever, cam and shaft on the non-power trim motors. it released the lock down when the motor was in forward gear. If you want one of these you can look up the parts on www.dougrussell.com or some other place, and get them from a junk yard or off eBay.

Hrm...

Let me ask, I still have the power trim cyl's but no hoses or working pump... is there any way to "seize" the trim cyls in the down position without any hoses or anything?

If i get the lock down lever, cam and shaft from the non-power trim motor, it will mount onto the power trim one no problem?

Mneumonic, You can "seize" the cylinders in any position you want. Simply put them in the desired position, fill them with oil (and bleed out the air), and install plugs in the ports. I think it would be dangerous to have them locked down in this way however.

The lock down lever, cam and shaft do not interact with the power trim system, so yes, you will be able to use it. You may as well pick up the non-power trim cylinders (actually shocks) and install them as well. This will make the motor an original non-PT/T.

Mneumonic, Those shocks are from an older 50HP. I simply do not know if they will fit. You may try to look up the part numbers online to see if they are the same as your motor's shocks.

Mneumonic, The parts you need are common to a whole bunch of models and years. If you find a junkyard with some 4 and 6 cylinder inline mercs in it, it is likely they will be available.

The shocks you need mount differently than the stock PT&T cylinders. There is a stainless steel, 1/2" fine thread bolt 2/3 of the way up the transom clamp that holds your PT&T brackets to the motor. This bolt should hold the top part of the shock. The bottom part of the shock mounts where your PT&T cylinders mount.

If you still do not have any luck, contact Clams Canino, he may be willing to sell you a pair.
