Locktite or Anti-Seize/

I've always used the silver colored anti-seize compound on marine bolts to prevent corrosion and breaking off studs in blocks and other "stuck/broken bolt" type problems. I notice the Yamaha Repair Manual mentions Loctite thread sealer for certain bolts. Any opinions on which of these is the best product to use? I run in mostly fresh water, some saltwater. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Hi Robert , I've used Permatex 80632 thread sealer for years on just about every threaded fastener on a boat . It's actually a pipe thread sealant and lowers the friction so be careful on torqued bolts , (go slow) . It Wont wash off like anti -seize can and bolts will come out after years of being in place without galling . I don't use it on anodes though as it may insulate them .
This is just my opinion and my experience I'd sure like to hear Rodbolts opinion .

Also be carfull on which u use the locktight and anti seze on certian bolts that have antiseize can loosen from the vibration and cause on the water problems anti zeaize meen that it can not tightn effectivley and can back off during travel lock tight depending on wich u use RED is PERMENT and BLUE is Mediem red u have to usually us a tourch to take off and blue an impact or something that applys torgue and if u use permetex selent be careful on wich u use cause many engine parts are aluminum and some of the permetex will eat the aluminum
I would use what Yamaha states because they state that info for a very important reason

thanks and that sounds like some good stuff, and like you, I'd love to hear Rodbolt's opinion on this subject. I removed my lower unit's bolts one at a time last week and the threads were very clean like new, with no sign of any sealant or compound on them. guess salt water use is the big issue on this.

oh yes i going through h^^l with mine lower unit do to saltwater it was ate up bushing in it and cuased the two water pump bolts to break off

Read label some of these products have copper in them, which is a no no.

Never-Seize (trade mark) has tin, used by aircraft tech.

I,v used red on eccentric crank shafts turning 1400 rpm. eccentric shafts are found in vibrating tables forged cranks. I would not use that in a outboard motor myself for the fear of not getting it back a part with out damageing bolts or castings.

Outboard castings are not made with high silicon metal its only a 356 type alloy. High cost metal, but not the best for the red.

what I do is use the specified product or its eqivalent where the manual instructs me.
on general fasteners like water pump housing bolts and lower unit attaching bolts or t-stat or poppit valve bolts either pipe thread sealant with teflon or quicksilver special lube 101.
just depends on what I am fastening,what the book calls for and what 30 + years of assembling/dissasembling fasteners requires.
gotta remember I have grown up with salt water and the various effects it has on metals.
