My first time working on a Mercury outboard. Doing waterpump & all seals in lower unit (1985 45HP outboard). I am familier with OMC gasket compounds, triple guard grease, etc. The Clymer manual referances Loctite Type 'A'. I assume this product is out dated. Have had no luck searching for info. Does anyone know its equivilent?

Thanks

Re: Loctite Type 'A'

Loctite should have a site. They make numerous thread sealants for different applications and are very much alive and well as a company. Sometimes they ID by the alphabet like your A, and sometimes by a number like 232 for example. Their products are finally getting into the auto parts stores. I used their stuff at work for 36 years and only recently have I been able to find it in automotive stores.

If you don't find what you want, call them.

Thanks Mark
I had to call Loctite and found out the up to date equivalent is Loctite 088 (#08831) or Loctite 290 (#29021).

Re: Loctite Type 'A'

Well..done enough with Loctite for years (Machinist), and Clymer (uugggh...Type A is a Military designation!...and from my 50 page Loctite book its a RED Threadlocker, and red is PERMENANT!) ..Clymer is as usual off.
You didn't mention the application here, but 290 is Green...for assembled parts, works by capillary action. Now I have done enough lower work to give ya some basics.
242 is Blue. Removable.
Any RED is for screws you NEVER want to get out..I mentioned green
I have never used anything but Blue 242 on a lower screw, and sure that all you need. Any gasketing, get a tube of Permetex...hope this helps

Re: Loctite Type 'A'

Great info. The application for the loctite is on the outside diameter of all oil seals in the lower unit. I did notice some remnants of a hardened red material when removing the old seals. I don't remember using such a product on my Evinrudes, I think they called for gasket sealing compound on the O.D. & triple guard grease on the rubber seal (I.D.). I don't have that manual handy. I am a little leery about using the red though. All the other compounds, greases, etc. seem to be similar between Mercury & OMC (BRP), just different brand names. I mean a seal is a seal, right?

Yep, seal a seal. Now that I know what the application is, it makes sense. See, the red stuff (threadlocker) is pretty corrosive, and thats why it works so well on bolts..eats at the metal so it turns into one piece.
There are seal and bearing retainer lockers..
Just looked at my book, and it's RC/609, Green, thats the general purpose bearing and seal retainer.
Loctite 290 is for bolts, also green.
Included a link here (when there, scroll down to 290 for its app..)
Anyway, if you have a good clean surface and a tight fit, I'd just do them dry (just did a Tohatsu LU), but a retainer can't hurt..... A link..
