depends on whether or not the water tube, shift rod and drive shaft have to be replaced. the only way to tell is to remove the lower unit.

now removing the lower unit, does that mean new gaskets. or is it just bolted

is there a way to tell if the motor was built with the extention, or if it was added at a later date. by the model # or serial #.

thanks for the fast reply

You'll definitely have to replace the driveshaft with a short one. If it's a factory original long shaft, you'll have to replace the shift rod also, and cut off the water tube(s) or replace them with short ones. I guess you could cut off the shift rod also, but the cut has to be exactly right or it won't shift properly.

As a simple solution, you could always raise the motor up 5 inches on the transom. They sell transom adapters for this I believe right here on iBoats. I have seen this done on boats but don't really know how it would affect performance. Thinking about it, I don't seem an effect.
