The rivets on the splashwell are attatched to the back side panel, in a blind kinda way. Im sure im not sayingit right.

You are correct RJ...some are accessible...most are not. See attached pics of their proximity. Pic # 3 is zoomed out view and shows a space behind side splashwell panel...my fingertips are touching some of the concealed rivets. Many more are simply not accessible.

I believe the only way to remove splashwell and expose the transom is to drill the 30 to 40 buck rivets on the port and starboard gunnel (gunwale)...and the whole thing will lift off in one complete piece.

I think the person who took the pics of the gunnel cap without the splashwell... I posted this morning made a lot of extra work for himself.

Thoughts?? Comments??

I live a couple of miles from a small airport with an aircraft paint and body shop. I think I may tow the boat over to the shop and ask their advice on which way to attack this wrinkle. I talked to the owner a couple of weeks ago about buck rivets and he offered to have his fellows rivet everything back together with the exact same type of rivets when I reach that point. He also offered advice on how to repair the dent in the bow and quoted me a great price to prime boat with etching primer and then paint with one color.

He realizes this is a project boat and knows I want to do as much as possible...but he did say if I got into a jam or had any questions to come by and have a cup of coffee while his fellows evaluate the problem.

I hate doing this so soon...but what I fear most is missing something so obvious and doing a lot of extra work which would not be necessary.

This morning I did a Google Search for Lone Star Medallion. I wanted to find the pics of the Medallion with the transom cap and gunnel removed...the same ones I posted on Sunday. I had done this before and had found those pics by searching Google and then selecting IMAGES...from the Google Search Results. But this time...when I located one of the pics...I selected view page...and low and behold....an iboats page popped up!!! Now keep in mind I have searched iboats for this topic and for transom replacement...NO Luck on my previous iboat searches...THAT is a mystery!

Anyway...check this out...http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...pair/553447-63-lonestar-medallion-restoration

The pics and a write-up on how to gain access were covered in a thread a few years ago. After reading the entire thread...I now see that I MUST drill all of the rivets on each side of the gunnel (gunwale). I am hoping to get after this next phase in a couple of days. We are under the threat of severe weather for today and again later tonight...so I will find something else to do today. Showers and thunderstorms are suppose to continue through Friday...but I think I can get some drilling done between some storms.

Maybe slap on some paint remover too!

I'd like to hear your thoughts or suggestions after you have had a chance to read the other thread.

Yeah ive found google is better at searching than iboats. Just add iboats to the end of the google search.

Enjoy the rivets....

64...thanks for posting the other link! Great info! I was reading boatnut's thread and learned so much...made me glad I did not have to deal with the problems he had with PO mods. I need to go back and finish the thread.

RJ...thanks for the search tip. What really makes me happy is the fact I did not create any extra work...so far. I still need to contact satx about the pattern for the floor. What material do you fellows I should use for the floor? What coating/paint would you suggest. The pro's and con's are stuff I want to hear.

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone used Mr. Muscle oven cleaner to remove paint? That stuff is expensive everywhere but Office Supply's online store. Heard it was good stuff...

Never head of it.

I used 5/8 thick. When you stuff the foam in you get supoort. Coated the bottom.

Ok...just finished reading boatnut;s thread. I need to contact him and find out what happened. Did he finish the LS or what? Thread just ended at page 6 after a storm.

RJ, did you use regular 5/8" plywood and coat with epoxy or what? Inquiring minds wanna know...hope it's not an ancient Chinese secret.

jbcurt00...thank you for filling in the gaps on boatnut's LS! I was wondering.

I stopped by the nearby airport paint and body shop today. The owner asked me how my project was coming along...I then hit him with 100 questions. Very helpful and kind. Once again he offered to help whenever I needed it...I told him I would be back when it was time to replace the buck rivets and then paint the boat. I am simply not setup to paint these days in my current location...plus the deal he made me is just too good to pass up. I'm no professional and they are. I saw their work on some very expensive aircraft.

Also got a call today on my outboard. She is waiting on the linkage for the 3 carbs. My mechanic said he found NOS (New Old Stock) linkage on eBay..when it arrives she will be like new. She is a 1979 Mercury 115 and should push my Medallion along at a healthy pace.

That is about all the news...still raining but should quit in time for the weekend...so that is when I plan to resume drilling rivets. Thanks for following my adventure!

Ok...I was gonna wait till it was time to mount my Merc on the Medallion before I told the story of my 115...but maybe I should get this out of the way now.

The PO of my Medallion told me he had a Merc 100 HP and it ran like the wind. I am aware the max recommendation from LS on the Medallion was 90 HP. I have also heard the method of HP calculation is different today than in the good old days. I doubt I will ever test top end as my days of youthful foolishness have long passed.

The story behind the Merc 115...a couple of weeks after buying my Medallion...I was looking on CL for a suitable motor. I found an ad with a 1976 Cajun Bass Boat...motor and trailer for $300. Everything looked great except the owner said the floor in the boat was spongy. I knew if the ad was real then "Momma" wanted that thing out of the yard...nobody sells a rig like that so cheap...unless something is wrong with the motor, no titles,..or there is outside influence.

The other possibility was he was a scammer. I wrote the fellow...he gave me a legit address so I took off to see the rig some 80 miles away. When I got there I kept my mouth shut while he told me the story behind the boat. I walked around the boat and said "it sure looked better in the pictures", made a few faces and he blurted out "will you give me $150?". I thought for a minute and said $140 cash and within 5 minutes I was hooking it up to the back of my truck. License tags on the trailer were current. Motor had not been started in almost 2 years...but ran good so he said.

As I was about to drive away he appeared with a 5 gal bucket full of switches and gauges and said I don't have any need for these.

The Merc compression tested at 120 lbs in all 6 cylinders...a new diaphram for the fuel pump...impeller...and all the carbs got a new kit. The motor is solid!! Here in Central Texas, most boats have made a trip or two to the Gulf. The salt water takes a toll on everything. The motor and trailer do not show any signs of ever being in salt water. Yesterday my mechanic friend told me he found NOS (new old stock) linkage for the TOP and my Merc will be ready soon.

I decided to attach a few pics of my CL deal...so you can see what $140 bought.

Were you wearing a mask and holding a shot gun?;)

:D No sir...I think the key points in this story were Momma wanting that "Darn thing out of the yard"...making the faces and keeping my mouth shut. The reason I offered $140 is I only had $20 dollar bills. I liked the idea of giving him $140 better than $160!!

The controls and linkage for the OB are pretty rough on both the Medallion and the Cajun Bass boat...what do you fellows recommend as far as new rigging and controls?

I have been quite fortunate with this project...the aircraft paint and body shop will rivet my LS back together after the transom is replaced...prime and paint the boat with 2 colors for $1200...which I feel is very reasonable. I will bang the dent/dings out...and strip the paint. Thoughts? Comments?

dammit man that still reads good the second time....

In retrospect, I should have had the boat stripped and painted, would have been about $750 in my neck of the woods, buddy owns body shop and like $20 bills. May do it in a few years.

If by linkage you mean cables, get new ones, proper length here on iboats - I had to get new one for my motor off the donor boat and they are much smoother anyway. On the controls, pull them apart and make sure any plastic parts are good otherwise sand down and repaint - I did that for the Carver in my sig below.

go to post 192 and read a few. Nothing earthshattering, and I know mine is an i/o control, but you'll get the idea.

RJ...the price he quoted included marine/aircraft grade paint and etching primer.

A nearby marina wanted $4700 to replace transom, strip, prime and paint with marine grade paint. Yikes!! I about swallowed my tongue when they quoted me that price! I figured $1200 was a steal...for the whole enchilada!

Considering what I have spent thus far for everything. I need a new compressor and do not want any overspray paint on my classic Mini Coopers. Don't have a paint booth setup and no room to build one in my current location. (time for a bigger shop)
.
BTW...I did hear from SATX on the floor patterns. Said he thinks he still has them...although he sold his LS Medallion. He is going to mail them to me.

I gotta admit...in the 40 or so years that have passed since I bought/sold used boats in Michigan...a lot has changed...plus my mechanic/partner took care of all the details and repairs. (I should have paid more attention to parts...etc.) A friend recommended I go with Uflex for the steering setup. I have almost zero knowledge in this area...and would not recognize a good idea over a bad.

I'm not trying to be a perfectionist for period everything on this project. You probably already came to that conclusion long ago. I just want something reliable and fun.
