My uncle's 1985 20' I/O bowrider has been sitting uncovered for the last two years, just this year he gets it "running" again and wants to start using it. He calls me a few weeks ago and asks me to go out with him and give him a hand, I did. He's in his mid 50's, and he shows his age well, I did EVERYTHING. From driving the truck/trailer to loading, unloading and driving the boat all day. I hate his boat, its the most annoying boat to drive, seats too low, windshield too high, gotta squat to see, I just hate it. I wouldn't take it if it was free.
Among a lot of little things, two major things weren't working on the boat, the bilge pump, and the trim for the outdrive would only work sometimes, I had a hell of a time getting it up to get it on the trailer. After we got the boat out of the water and got home. I told him he shouldn't be using the boat until those two things are taken care of, he seems to agree.

I've been using the Montauk a lot. I got out yesterday, and today. My uncle calls me this morning asking me to go out with him, I tell him I'm already on the water on my boat. So my aunt and uncle pick up my 23y/o cousin and head to the water. Once they get in the water they call me, I'm rafting at in island, swimming, exploring the island, talking with other boaters, having a good time. I have a full boat, three others with me. My uncle says he's coming out, so I end up waiting around this island for hours waiting for him. When they finally get there, I sit with them for a while, they are looking to hang around for a while. I only stayed because I felt I had to. Well, sure enough my uncle didn't do anything to the boat since the last time I was out with him, his outdrive is stuck trimmed all the way out of the water, no way to get it down, the hydraulic engine thing is dead.

Surprise, surprise!! I told him not to use the boat! I had to tow him all the way back to the ramp, two and a half hours in two foot waves going 5mph @ 2000RPMs. I was pissed, ruined the whole second half of the day. Normally I wouldn't mind, but my uncle should have known better then to launch a boat in that condition, next time I'll leave him! I like to help people out, but it sucks having the day ruined over something that should have never happened.

Is that the same boat you were contemplating fixing up last year?

If so, sounds like you were correct in your assessment a year ago.

Did he atleast fill your gas tanks?

Seems your uncle could learn a thing or two from you if he would listen! Well you did the right thing both times..family is family.
However next time you might want to check your caller ID before answering and let him leave a message :)

There's lots of vintage in that old cellar. At least it wasn't a political post. :D
