long or short shaft question

The former motor on my outboard boat project was a '72 85hp Johnson with a serial # of: 85L####(?)...so does that mean it was a long shaft? My transom at center reads 21". The hull is a flatbottom. Are my measurements off because I see 20" long shaft ads. Also, someone told me that a flatbottom hull always takes a short shaft and a deep V hull always takes a long shaft. Please clarify. Thanks.

your 21 inch transom takes a long shaft motor. "Also, someone told me that a flatbottom hull always takes a short shaft and a deep V hull always takes a long shaft" they don't know what they are talking about.
