I picked up a 1983 evinrude 9.9 that runs great and is really nice condition. What i did not realize at the time is that it was a long shaft. This is really not too much of a problem except my boat has a 17" transom. I have been doing some searching and found a few articles that shows exactly how to do this by replace the drive shaft and the shifting shaft. I was wondering if anyone knows where to get this parts used and also what else should i check down there while i have it apart.

It might be a lot cheaper and simpler to put a jack plate on your transom.

Drive shaft and shift shaft, they be found used at a good price then the water tube needs to be shortened, totally doable.

Check twin city outboards. Almost certain they will have the parts
