Long shaft question

OK I've got a 12 semi-v aluminum boat with a 15" transom. It currently has an 8HP Mariner with an extra long shaft. The cavitation plate is 8" below the hull  . It's all I've got and I have no funds, so I'll have to make the best of it.

My question is will building a jack plate of say 5" be worth the effort? I don't want to go any higher because the transom is of the thin-walled variety. I feel like I need to do something because this thing is dog-slow and won't get on plane unless I load down the front of the boat.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Long shaft question

Welcome to iboats!

Easy to manufacture your own jack plate with plywood and angle metal (aluminum is best)....... you can build the support that will raise to OB 5" and be strong to your transom.
