Long Shaft Xtra Long Shaft Lower Unit V-150 Black Max

Have 1983 2.0 liter V-150 Black Max 25" shaft with bad lower unit. Found 1984 same model but 20" shaft on craiglist. is it possible to change the drive shafts to interchange or are the Lower units completely different ??

Lower unit needs to come apart to change the shaft.

Make sure driveshashfts are the same(preload or non preload) as different shafts use different housings and gear sets and look the same externally

They make a 5" extension kit. Do a internet search. All ya probably need is tha 5" driveshaft extension and longer studs for tha 20". Studs depends on tha ones in your gear case. If yours has tha 5" spacer on tha down housing ya should have tha studs in it already. If that's tha case, have ya had tha gear case off before? Some of tha 25" that use tha "5 inch spacer" also used tha 5 inch drive shaft extension....

How do you know which it is ?

Pre-load has a "pin" ('84 last of 'em I think, maybe '85) sticking outta tha top of tha drive shaft. Any complete gear case (2.0, 2.4, 2.5) any year, same length shaft will work. Just tha internals that vary a little..........And tha gear ratios can be different also. Yours is gonna be a 2 ta one more than likely as are almost all 2.0 motors............

thanks for replies. I'll have to pull lower unit and see if I have the extension and studs. have a safe New Years
