I had a man give me a 1968 johnson 6hp for my sons, it has a brand new power head and has never been ran. when the power head was installed the carb was also rebuilt. I took the motor and put it in a tank and started it. It took 4 pulls and it fired up, the problem is that it wont idle and wants to shut off. Do you or anyone think that all I need to do is clean out the carb or put a new rebuild kit in it? Remember it has not been ran at all, has had NO fuel ever put to it until I tryed the other day. what ya think I need to do?

This could well be your fix. I would suggest looking over the many articles in the FAQ part of this forum. There are some good pointers including one on Awakening a sleeping outboard. True enough your carb. is clean but your impeller is old etc. Best of luck. I am assuming you've got fresh gas mixed 50/1. Rick.

it will need a new impeller, sitting that long. also make sure you have spark on both cylinders, if the coils have not been changed, they could be cracked and failing when they heat up.

Before tearing things apart, I would just open the needle valves a little more and see if it changes anything. The water pump impeller could likely need attention though. You can get a visual of your coils, by removing the small plate on top of the flywheel.
