Bought the boat this summer. Changed oil in July. During the change, I installed an AC Delco filter appropriate for the engine rather than buying a merc filter. The only difference is that the filter is longer. Maybe 3 inches longer than the merc filter. Does this matter?

Oil pressures is good and no off effects to report. I'm getting my winterization list ready and would like to know if I'm okay to use another AC or if I should stick with the merc filter. Can't find a definitive answer searching through the posts.

Thanks.

Re: Long vs. short oil filter

I have always used the longest filter I can, on all my vehicles, I like the extra filtering capacity.

The amount of time a boat is running, as compared to a car going 3000 between filters, is probably like a car going a few hundred...AC should be fine

Ayuh,.......

Most all of the Filter Manufacturers make both a short,+ a long oil filter for Chevies,......
It's all about the available Clearence as to Which 1 you use......

I use Napa's rebadged Wix filters on Mine.......

The merc filter has a higher flow capacity. However, if you are using the long filter it may offer enough extra flow to keep the bypass valve from opening, but I don't know for sure.

Ok. So it sounds like it doesn't matter too much. I'll stick with the AC then. Danka.
