Longshaft or Shortshaft?? Whats the difference?

hey
im looking for an outboard motor for a canoe and was wondering what the difference between long and shortshaft outboard motors and which one i should get and why? is one better performing then the other or something ????

Just what the term implies- shaft length is different for different applications-
If you want to mount one on a canoe i exspect you want a short shaft
