this is from my 1988 70 hp evinrude.

I took it apart and am rebuilding it, and am ready to reassemble.
I bought the motor, but didnt RUN it...but it produced great spark.the compression was good as well.

two things:

the burn mark.. I dont know if it came from the inside out, or the outside , in

second the paint-coating that is peeling around the inner shelf. is that ok? does that surface need to be protected??

I dont know if it is an electrical barrier or just a rust preventative coating

thanks

That stator is toast. It is surprising that it runs. Not so surprising if it runs going out but not coming back home. That is one of the charge coils. "Charge" as in charging the power pack, not charging the battery.
