Boat Lower Unit
1988 Johnson GT 150 VRO6
Model: J150STLCEM
Did I do this? This is what I did in a nut shell, I watched a U-Tube video on putting oil in my lower unit. Remove top plunge, fill from bottom until, oil comes out of top opening. DONE.
Started my 1988 Johnson GT 150 VRO v6 and all was good. Several days later I started the engine to go fishing with my grandson and when I shut the motor off I seen oil that was leaking from around the propeller and around the top of the bottom unit. (See attached pictures). My question is this: Did I do something wrong?
I am 68 years old and have worked on many cars all my life ( I restore old hot rods) but boat motors is new to me, and I have never been in a lower unit. Can any one offer any advice on what I have to do to fix this?
Any special tools, advice, drawings, videos, parts, what part I need to replace, place to buy parts etc. Any and all advice is welcome. I am a boat novice and I am very hungry for advice. I know nothing but, I have gotten great advice from the users of this forum in the past.
Please help me
Thank You
Mr. Steve

That leakage may be normal for a 2 stroke.----Was there any water in the oil when you drained it ?----Pressure test can be done to see if there are any leaks.----Lots of videos on the tube on lower unit seal kit installation.

Yes, most likely 2 stroke exhaust....when changing low unit oil change or inspect screw washer seals, also any one man break bleeder/intake manifold tester will work on a lower unit.

I did check the oil and drain a little out. It is blue, the same color of the new oil I put in it. I seen no water. So because I have about 2 gallon of 3 months old gas (started with full tank 3 months ago) Could the oil have concentrated in the gas at the bottom of the tank and be burning stronger than normal. I did think it started with a little bit more blue smoke out the exhaust than what is usually does. New fuel and correct amount of fuel and I will try to start it again. Raining here today so I will try it tomorrow.
Thank you, something I never thought of, that is a load off my mind.

Simple fact for you.-----When piston is at the bottom of the stroke the intake ports are open.----The exhaust ports are open.----Some of the fresh fuel / oil goes right through the motor !!

When running on muffs or in a barrel you do not get a clean burn and stuff accumulates in the exhaust until it bleeds down. Take it out and run her hard and it will clean itself up.
