Looking at a Bayliner with an L-drive.....

I'm looking for some input about a boat we're looking at buying. After reading up on these I'm not so sure though. Besides Boater Dude I'm not seeing/reading anyone who has much good to say about these boats

Anyhow, While looking around and not finding much in our price range that didnt need to start without a complete interior overhaul we did see one that kinda caught my fancy......

Its a 1990 Bayliner 1870, its a 18 foot (17'10") bowrider and has the Force "L-drive" (*Outboard engine mounted as an inboard!) propulsion system. I know your gonna laugh but its owned by a "not-so" little old lady who's owned it since it was new. Its alway's been kept on hoist while in the lake and has always been stored indoors during the winter. By the looks of the inside and out of the boat I'd say that these were pretty accurate statements! I did a "search" on the NADA website and price she's asking is in the ball park.

I know a little about outboards, not much about Bayliners.... I know they went thru a "bad time". My thoughts were for the price it'd make a great little starter boat for us and also being a smaller one would be easier to tow, launch and handle. I'm not looking into becoming a member out at DYC (*Detroit Yacht Club) , just a fairweathered weekend cruiser.

So, with all that being said I thought I'd tap the limitless resources of the membership of this fine website and get some experienced comments about what to check on, check for and other thoughts and opinions.

Thanks in advance!

Force L drive? Would you buy a Yugo?

Parts are difficult to impossible to find. Finding somebody eager to work on one is even harder.

Yeah...you should stay away from the L-drive model. Maybe look for a bayliner trophy with a standard force motor...you could maybe find one in good shape for a resonable price and would be a good first boat.

Re: Looking at a Bayliner with an L-drive.....

Well...I had one for 4 years with absolutely no problems. A lot of the lower unit parts are interchangable with outboard parts. If it is well maintained, it will last a long time. Parts that are specific to the L drive are getting scarce, but like I said, some parts are interchangable.

Mine was a 1989 and was rebuilt by the previous owner just a year prior to my buying it. He had reciepts. It was a 90hp on a 17' Bayliner. We ran that boat every weekend 8 hours a day. Good boat for me and my wife to learn on. If I'd been more educated about boats at the time, I'd probably have passed on the boat due to the reputation the "L" drive has.

The boat was a little underpowered, but towed a tube well enough. We've since upgraded to a Baja with a V-8, but if the great deal on the Baja hadn't landed in my lap, I'd still have the Bayliner today.

I had a full survey done on the boat and I'd suggest you do the same to see what you're getting into. You never know what little old ladies are capable of...case in point is my mom. :D

Any advice on getting our L drive repaired, we have the same boat as Burksee, but we need a new motor or rebuilt, can we upgrade to a 4 stroke? Any ideas out there?

mike1067 - It's not that I dont mind anyone "hi-jacking" my thread but I'm thinking you'd get more/better responses if you started your own and titled it as such.......

I havent bought this one yet, I'm hoping the price drops as the season gets closer to ending. If I dont get this one we'll keep looking!

"Good Luck" with yours. I've heard e-bay is a great source for "L-drive" parts.
