I just went through this thread and though to myself that I must have been crazy for buying my rig. It's almost everything here people said not to buy and I'm enjoying the hell out of my mistake.

Here's some things to consider, and they're not things to look out for.

You never mentioned what your budget was or how much the guy was asking for the boat you went to see. I'll bet he knew what he had and wasn't being totally unfair. Or perhaps your budget won't support what you are looking for. You can do all of the things everyone mentioned above and guess what...you could still get screwed. Use your best judgement and have fun.

I'm glad i found this thread. I'm looking at a 1984 Four Winns 160 Marquise also with the Merc engine, has the merc outdrive, and long story short this boat has never been in the water. has been shipped around the country and in storage. last time the engine was run/tuned up was in 2003 then winterized. So if I hear everyone correctly the merc/merc combo is good? this is a very hard boat to find any history on. any tips or pointers would be appreciated.

Wow. That sounds interesting. Do you have any pictures of this boat? Has it been stored indoors? A Mercruiser 3.0 L (140HP) with an Alpha drive is a good match for that boat.

I haven't got any pics yet but I will as soon as get the boat. The gentlemen is out of town at the moment. The boat was stored inside until 2003 then shrink wrapped and stored in a storage yard since. The shrink wrap stayed mostly in tack but collapsed in the bow area and one of the front windshields was busted (now replaced). So water had gotten into the boat but drain plug was out and no standing water. Transom is solid around drain plug, interior had molded some but for has cleaned up almost like new, some fading on the exterior paint but has buffed out like new, Floor is solid as a rock, engine/outboard winterizing fluids have been drained and replaced, Spark plugs still had fogging oil on them, and impeller replaced. The only problem is boat hasn't been started yet. We are supposed to put some muffs on it this weekend and try to get it started. Any other suggestions before trying to revive this boat?
