one is a 1995 seaswirl 20 footer with a 5.8 OMC other is a 1998 searay 18.5ft with a 3.0 mercruiser.

the searay is $7000 while the seaswirl is $8500

how much difference in speed, acceleration, and fuel mileage will the two boats differ? i just sold a 73 glastron that had a 5.0 volvo penta and i thought the gas mileage was fine, with just two people on board. i also rented a 3.0 searay 16th and had 6 people on board with cooler and tube and that thing maxed out at 33mph while tubing. 35 with out the tuber. my boat maxed out at 45.

im thinking ill be happy with the 3.0 for a while, maybe till i save up enough for another boat?

The 5.8 FORD OMC is pretty much a dead end on parts as OMC is long gone and ford is to in the marine world

And the 3.0 is ridiculously under powered if you ever plan on pulling anything water toy wise or putting a significant number of people in that boat.

A properly powered boat that can cruise at 1/2 throttle will probably get a little less fuel economy than a strung out underpowered motor run at 75%+ throttle, but it's not worth it in my opinion.

I would keep looking. As said, OMC outta biz and the 3.0 is best in a smaller boat IMO........SS

That sounds perfect for an 18 - 19 foot boat. If you have the extra money hold out for MPI (multiport fuel injection) you will get more HP and better fuel economy.

You DO NOT want an OMC. inho, 4.3L mercruiser or volvo is minimum. drawback, they are alot more expensive, to maintain and harder to work on, than an outboard. i have a 5.7L volvo, something wrong with it, it goes to the shop. i maintain all my outboards.

there are a lot of underpowered boats around with the 3.0L.

LK, keep in mind that some us are a bit older and don't care much for bending over to reach down into a bilge to work on an I/O. Its not the level of ability to perform the work, but it is where all the work is located. An outboard, everything is right out there in your face to work on. No bending over,,,,,,,it took me about 10 years to understand why older mechs prefer the outboard. I myself can understand after working on my own I/O for the last 20. Its not as easy now as it was when I got my first I/O. I actually tip my hat to the marine mechs that have to deal with some of the locations of the I/O's day after day.

Hey SS
Teen? Moi? Not! I'll have you know my special lady is well into her 20's now (32 actually). hehe
I'm looking forward to this season too... I was starting to worry about that heating issue but I got 'er finally. I started my maintenance this year from the hardest stuff first. All I have left to do is an oil change... yay!

LEKNIGHT... don't buy an underpowered boat.
