Hey guys, been a while since I been on here...got the bug for a restore again. What is a good relatively easily findable vintage project boat candidate? I don't know why but I seem to like nothing newer than like 1965...I like the old vintage run abouts with the cool chrome lights and 'hood ornaments' on them. Just lookin for some good advice. Thanks!

Come on SP, that'd make for a GREAT pair of matching Custom MFGs :D

Hoyt, you need to be a bit more specific:

Your location (at least a state)?
How far you're willing to travel"
Tin or glass?
Do you want vintage or unique & rare?
Budget?
Total, moderate or just a bit of resto needed?

Derelict boats 40+ yrs old are easier to find then I'd like to think.

Check Lanier in GA. Many many project hulls available, but if you really want a MAJOR project, check the tab for 'projects'. Those are ROUGH & in need of a major resto. Note the fine print w/ each ad. Some are no trailer/motor/windshield etc. Esp the boats under the project tab.

My pick of ads for today:
Vintage boat

Vintage tin

Best of luck

Certain boats are worth restoring, like Donzi sweet 16/2+3, Older Bertams, Glass Jersey Speed Skiffs, ect...

Then theres the ones that are restored just for the hell of it, or for a usefull ride, or out of sentiment, ect

Just like with cars, you should decide if you want to do an old Dodge Aries K, or Challenger...

If you are in the north, check out Rawhide in New London, WI. They are a non profit that sells boat on E-bay that are donated. They allow you to come out and go through their lot if you want to. The last time a I bought a boat from them they had 15 or 20 on E-bay and about 200 on the lot. Sometimes they get some real neat vintage boats in need of resto's that do not go for a whole lot of money.

That Red Fish is exactly what I am looking for! What would a reasonable offer for a boat like that? I also like the tin one but I do not want to put $800 into one. Man I like that Red Fish!

Re: Looking for a good first project?

No motor
No windshield
No trailer

Are all bad enough

The killer: No title. In WV, that isn't a problem, IF I trust that the seller has legal right to the boat & can legally sell it to me. Dealing w/ the executor of an estate, it'll be trickier to decide if that's the case.

The seller's ad reads like they think they have a unique, super rare AND super valuable boat.........

A bad combination, IMHO.

$100, or less, emphasis on less, as long as there's NO holes or gashes in the hull (a big if laying on the ground trailer-less) and they have to help you load it.

You may irritate the seller making that low of an offer. But it really isn't a great boat as it sits now. Just to get it water ready will not be cheap. Getting it to look like the red 1 I posted below, will cost a GREAT deal more.

'Vintage' glass boats are to easy to find to pay more when they're in this kind of shape. Unless you grew up using a 1958 Redfish your grandfather had at the lake house every summer, and it is THE ONE & ONLY year & model you want..

Re-done, they are correct, it'd be great looking:

Sir,

That would be an awesome boat that I would love to take on the restore of but I just don't have that kinda cash to put out on one right now plus it would be a long costly drive from Dallas. That will make a fine boat for someone!
She is a beaut!

I like to think so. Didn't realize you were so far away. Oh well.
