Looking for a little bigger ski

I have an O'Brien World Team Ski at 68" and I'm 220 - I can get up on it successfully now using a deep v rope and 2 feet in the bindings. I've rode is about 5 or 6 times now, but I still feel the ski is a little too small for me and I feel like I'm dragging too much when up. Anything under 28 seems too slow, 30 seems better but too fast for me and I'd prefer to ski 25-28 till i get better. After taking a few face plants and I think I'm going too fast right now - ha ha

Anyhow - looking at these 3 skis - Connelly Outlaw 69", O'Brien Sequence 69", Connelly Pilot 475, and Radar P-6 69"

Anyone with experience on these skis - all are going to be a little wider than my current ski and a wider tale - Current ski is 6.75 wide - the best I can tell the outlaw and p-6 is about 8" and the Pilot about 9.75 - not sure on the Sequence. I think the skinny tale on my ski is causing a lot of drag on me. I know that will be great when I get better.

i have no aspirations of running the course ever - just want to get where I can ski more comfortably with reduced fatigue.

as always, thank you !

What part of the country are you in?

Unfortunately I've got no info on any of the skis you are asking about.

Howdy,

I got a Radar P6, and everyone that has been on it, love it!
I did a ton of research before I got it, and the reviews were great.
My buddy is 190lbs, and he has been on all the different skis on my boat, and thinks the P6 is the most solid,
in all types of water. Crossing the wake has been a breeze, and getting up is a snap.
I am looking forward to "actually" using the ski, as I have gotten some great pointers here on the forum.
Patiently waiting until Monday........
There are always some great deals out there at the end of the season, and the guys at Bart's gave me a killer deal on ski and bindings,
I really like the boot on my ski, also, there are deals on Radar's web site
Radar Skis2012 P-6 - Blank w/fin

I think they still have some 2011 P6 skis there too.....

Hope that helps????

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

If you have a Sun and Ski anywhere around you (or try the web) see if they still have good deals on the 2012 HO Triumph. A 69 would be a great ski for you. Its kind of in between the wider ski's your looking at and a more traditional slalom ski. You want the 2012 or 2013 though, not the older version. You might also want to look at their comp freeride, but the deal on the Triumph if there are any more left was a great one.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

I use a Connelly which is 67" but VERY narrow at the rear. The high performance skis are narrow at the rear and the wider the rear......the more stable the ski. Narrow ones are very tippy and require a bit more speed. Maybe you just need a slightly wider ski at the rear

Somewhat related - would a 70" 2013 Connelly HP Slalom be okay for 220+ guys? The reason I ask is Barts has a killer deal on one right now with bindings. The HP seems to be somewhere between performance and freeride.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

quick update: Got to ski behind my friends Air Nautique last night on a small private lake. What a treat. A lot more power! Anyhow, i was up in 4 seconds on my ski, but then tried there 67" Obrien Sequence and I was out in about 2 seconds (didn't miss any ups on that ski) - what difference that wider ski made and I felt like it turned much easier.

I do have a question - i seemed to be fine on the 67" Sequence but I wonder if I should still go with the 69" sequence since my boat is not as powerful ? Will it make much difference on turning ability ? Again I'm 220 - but I do plan to be down to 195-200 by next summer.

for kicks it seems like the Connelly Shortline and Connelly Outlaw have the identical shape.

Very cool!

Those two skis are close, but I think the Shortline is only available in one length. It puzzles me what gap the Shortline fills on their linecard, maybe it just sports a different design from the Outlaw. For myself, I think I'm just going to buy the largest surface area ski I can get my hands on, like an HO Magnum or even a Big Daddy for two reasons 1) easy on myself since I struggle with any regular skis, and 2) easy on my wife so she's not necessarily required to drive 28MPH+, we can keep things slower.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

The Shortline is the single ski from their cayman combo set, I believe. I would get the combo set and have a ski to drop.

There is a huge difference between an HO Magnum and a Bid Daddy. The Bid Daddy is like two skis hooked together. It is obese.

I cannot say how it skis.

I have an older 72 inch HO Magnum. It is a fun ski. I can run the course on it at 15 off, 28 MPH.

My buddy who is just over 200 loves it. He tried a larger shaped Connelly with some friends and crashed pretty hard trying to cut moderately aggressively. The older Mangnum with the more traditional shape is much more fun.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

I've been through a few larger sticks recently in an effort to get back to slalom after a 30 year hiatus. I'm 225 lbs, and our boat loses a ton of it's muscle at 8,500' elevation, so it was a bit more work than in the old days.

Radar P6 71": Biggest I've tried that still can lay down a decent turn. Easiest deep water start, but friends joke that it needs running lights it's so damn big. Skis fine up to 30-32 mph, including turns, but above that might get hairy. Best bet for big doods, freeskiing, I/O's, slower speeds, learning.

Radar Theory and HO Triumph 69": Nice blend of wider and longer without getting too oversized. Takes a bit more effort on deep water start, but turns are noticeably more nimble. A bit more tiring both starting and skiing, likes faster speeds. Best bet for larger skiers that still want to chase balls behind inboard boats at higher speeds.

+1, the Big Daddy and other overshaped, oversized monsters are gonna be disappointing in the turns, especially if you are enjoying a smaller, higher performance ski.

Enjoy the rush.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

i got a 2012 Connelly Shortline 67" off of a scratch and dent site, tried it yesterday 3 times. Only 128.00 shipped with a free rope. It was a breeze to get up on, even behind my boat. I was up pretty fast, just had to wait for my boat to get up to speed. So much easier to ski than than my other ski. I felt more comfortable right away and was crossing the wake with no problems.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

67 seems a little small for 220Lbs, but it sounds like it works. If you're just planning on free skiing then why buy the Sequence, whats wrong with the Shortline?

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

Nothing wrong at all and I liked it skiing at 28 mph. Shortline and Sequence are basically the same ski mold - but the Sequence is just a lot prettier - ha ha. Connelly says the Outlaw and Shortline in 67" are good up to 210. Obrien says the sequence is rated 195 for some reason - not sure why

The Shortline only comes in 67 - it's 1.25 inches wider than my other ski so it it easy to get up on. Outlaw, Shortline and Sequence are all the same mold - i did some research on it. I'm sure there are a few minor differences. see my attached pic that I made.

i like the shortline alot - didn't feel like I was dragging like on the other ski.

My goal is to get down to 200 by next summer - dropped from 223 to 218 already.

Re: Looking for a little bigger ski

Skied my new Shortline 3 times again today. My son took a video and I was out in 5 seconds - i think that is pretty good considering my boat. I deleted some of my whining above. I really do like that ski and I made a good decision :)

thanks again for all the help guys !!

Glad you are liking the new ski!
The ski shape also looks and a lot like the previous KD PowerCarve and iConn SuperSidecut.
