Looking for a looooooong bow hook

I'm in the process of replacing my bow hook. I got the hook out, but the piece of wood they attached it do was pretty small. I was going to carve up a piece of 4x4 very hard wood to replace it. Problem is, I can't find any long bow hooks. They all seem to be about the same length, and that length is short.

For example:
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/...e-3-8x2-9-16-shank.aspx?a=435255&kwtid=281475

Thats probably exactly what I have now. What I really want is a hook just like that, but maybe 4 inches longer. Anyone know where I can get such a hook?

How about using a piece of 1/4" aluminum plate as opposed to a wood block...much stronger, and thinner.......lock it in a vise and hammer it until it matches the profile of your bow... I did it to my previous boat.

Actually no I hadn't, but this one looks good: 33641
But you don't list the full specs on that hook. Is that info you can get me?
This information would be helpful:

Particularly 'E' and 'D'.

Use the aluminum or painted steel plate for your backer along with some plywood if needed for cushion. It will perform as well as a 4x4 and be much less bulky. If you are pulling that hard on the bow hook, back in a bit deeper when you load.

An aluminum plate will never rot ,and you can bed it in with 3M -5200 or any construction mastic....worked on my first boat ,never a problem with it in over 10 yrs....and you will be able use a standard sized hook....

Re: Looking for a looooooong bow hook

Just wondering here....is your boat damaged at the bow hook ?? I ask because I am really having a hard time understanding why you need a bow hook with 4" of wood behind it....if your fiberglass is damaged,... ya need to repair the fiberglass....if you just want a stronger mount , ( as I did on my last boat , and will do during my current restore project) go with steel or aluminum(aluminum for me,...no painting needed)...it's just so easy this way... and, you can always replace the old hook with a nice shiny STOCK sized new one... hope this helps....:)

Nope no problem with the fiberglass. Just the wood piece rotted out. And i'm going with a 4x4 because I have tools to work with wood, and none to work with metal. Plus the first shaved 2x4 lasted 25 years, this second piece should last at least as long. Thats good enough for me.

OK so assuming I have the right hook. What (if anything) should I be using to A: glue the board in place, so it's held in place by more than just the hook itself. and B: what should I paint or seal the wood with?

Nope. They told me to call the manufacturer. And of course, no answer at the manufacturer.
