Well I have about 30K to spend. And am looking for a new Deck boat, something that can take between 8-10 adults on it. So I am thinking around like 22 foot maybe?

Anyhow, saw some boats by SeaRay, StringRay, etc. I am looking for some help and info here from people knowlegable in these things to tell me what the better brands are and some specific models that I should really consider. I also have a few questions hopefully somebody could answer..

1.) First I was looking at Pontoon boats, if you had to compare a deck boat with a Pontoon boat (both having say a 5.0 stern drive Merc Cruiser at 260hp), what would you think is the best boat to get for versatility, fun, durability, etc.?

2.) I know you really can't take Pontoon boats out into the ocean. Maybe in the bay with like 1-2 foot wakes, not much more. But could a deck boat handle the ocean with like 3-5 foot swells?

3.) Are deck boats V-bottomed like the ocean boats or are they flat almost like a pontoon boat? How about compared to a runabout type of boat?

Thanks all knowledgable boating masters!

you can get a 22' new stingray, 260hp merc, trailer for 30K. probably can't do any better. it's a "value" boat, but will perform and last if taken care of. good friend has a 2002 and loves it. nice boat.

Godfrey Marine has the HURRICANE series which is a very popular deck boat. They have introduced a new one for 2004 with a center console and head. Saw it at the NYC show and it looks like a nice all around boat. Not sure of price but I beleive your 30K will get a dealers serious attention to work with you.

godfreymarine.com

Kevin

1) Both are good all around boats. Deckboat will be dryer and handle better. Pontoon has more room for everybody to spread out and more comfortable seats.

2) Depends on the steepness (or "period") of the swell. Any boat can handle a long 3' swell. IMHO there is little difference in the offshore capabilities between bowriders and the deeper deckboat models. Neither is ideal for this.

3) The early deckboat designs all were intended for modest power, thus had modest deadrise (flatish hull bottom). The newest designs are much deeper, little different from a bowrider. Both types of deckboats, and everything in between, are still on the market. So you have to be specific about which deckboat model you want to know about.

Here are some more threads on deckboats that may help -

Help! for what's it worth, the stringray looks and performs more like a true powerboat than any pontoon boat. i think it looks much better than the hurricanes, can't comment on performance.

The best deck boat is the Splendor Cat. Deck boat of the year. It has a raised cockpit so the driver can see over the bow and the passengers and you can get any engine package you want.

www.splendorcat.com
