Check craigslist often. Don't be afraid to take a whole boat as a donor if it's cheap enough. There are websites such as www.claz.org that let you search multiple areas on craiglist easily. Also it helped me out a lot to develop a good relationship with a good local marine supply shop. When it came time for a motor they hooked me up with my Yamaha 70. If your current motor runs, you might want to see how you like it on the boat. I'm real happy with the Yamaha 70 on my Starchief.

I've have a good 70 Johnson but I'm a big boy (6.2 360) ex football player. Then you have the little lady and my 2 sons they want to go tubing. Is this going to be big enough for the cheseapke bay??????

Krackerman - Your Starchief is rated for up to a 120 hp motor. 70 will do what you want but is a little weak for your boat for tubing and ... I've read here that you should look for a minimum of 75% of max which would be a 90 hp.

The mid 80's and newer OMC motors are good motors and I'm pretty happy with the fuel usage on the 90 hp that we have. Don't get rid of your 70 until your sure you have a good running motor as a replacement.

Here is some info on your boat http://s731.photobucket.com/albums/...raft%20brochure/?action=view&current=6610.jpg

I think I have to agree with 64 on the HP upgrade. 70 is perfect for me. I kept everything in the restore light, I'm closer in size to a jockey than a football player and generally go out in mine by myself... With 4 in the boat you gonna need some more ponies :)

Look for a 115 hp Johnson. If you need the speed to get out of trouble you'll have it. You don't need to run wot all the time either, so gas usage would be reasonable.

Has anyone thought of twin 70's? I like the redundancy factor for the ocean.
