The engine on my 72 Sea Ray 190 SRV, decided to go to the big junk yard in the sky. (it was only 46 years old) So I am looking for a replacement, a used but running Mercruiser 165 4.1L inline 6. (the GM 250 in disguise) If I can find one here in the Pacific Northwest I can pick it up. Washington, Oregon, Idaho??, or even British Columbia Meanwhile I'm just using my kicker motor to go fishing. If anyone of you hear of anything please post it here or send me a PM.

go to car-part.com. look for a motor from a 1972-1981 chevrolet truck. you will get the same block and heads, then switch over your marine parts (water pump, accessories, rotating electrics, etc.)

if you find a 292, a bit of fab work for the starboard motor mount will get you a ton more power.

Thanks. That's option number 2. I am in no hurry so I will see what I can find that's a drop in. If not then I'll go the GM 250 route and marinize it. I realize that GM and Chevy put millions of these in trucks for about 30 years so junk yards are full of them.

A truck engine will be the best especially if you can get a 292. If you end up with a 292 you will have to extend the fuel line to the carburetor about 8” since the fuel pump is mounted toward the center of the block. Or just go to NAPA and buy longer line with the fittings already flared on and form a new one. The overall height is around 1.5” taller and the pan is slightly deeeper because of the longer stroke. You will have to add a piece of stainless tubing to the exhaust hose midway also. I have installed many of these and with the original 2 barrel carburetor you will have around 185 hp. With a Quadrajet they were rated @ 200 way back in the past.
I am pretty sure that by now your distributor has a lot of wear so it would be a good time to have it re-bushed with a Petronics kit.
Probably time for a new manifold and riser.
Mercruiser may still have a complete manifold kit that is not cheap but it was made to work on the 250 & 292.
Good luck

I have one that is complete. It's sitting on a stand inside my garage from a boat that had a bad floor and transom in it. I am in Utah though.
