Today I winterized the FW. Temp is dropping and soon, at night, it will be freezing so one less thing to worry about.
Took off most of the water hoses and opened the engine flush valves.
This was a bad year, no boating at all. Hope next winter passes fast so I can put the FW in the water and open up the throttle and see how she goes on open water. You can not imagine how I am looking forward to that day.
Patience is a virtue they say....
So, you will be attacking the upholstery of your FW? Please Lou, send some pics as the work progresses ! Is your boat on the dry or still in the harbor? Where you live, you can always adore your boat, the sea, the water.... Great place to live.
The Fletcher is nearly ready. Finished the fiberglass works wile temperatures are still OK.

Rock solid, now some paint to give it the finishing touch.
Started polishing, the result is.... great!

Looks Good! I will put up pix when I get the coaming pane off on the starboard side, this job is a pain because of how FW attached them, stainless studs with nuts on the inside, but of course the do not come off. When I did the port side I had to cut them with a hacksaw, took me hrs. This time I have an electric hacksaw that will work faster. I used a plastic wedge to push the panel away from the side of the boat so that I could get the blade in. Then I used studs that had wood screw threads on one end and machine screw threads on the other to secure the port side panel. That makes it much easier to get off if needed. The other thing I want to do after fixing the rotted wood on the starboard side one is to replace the loose old OMC throttle control, I have a nice new Teleflex Ch1700 which is much more positive but been lazy about changing it because removing these panels is such a pain. Here's the port side, they rot right at the last 18" or so of the panel, just carefully peeled back the old vinyl and then stapled it back on. Second pic is panel re-installed

During the winter, all we can do out here, is some finishing work. The Four Winns had some bad upholstery panels on the back seat. Took the components apart and used them as a jig. Some pictures make things easier to explain so....
All that is left to do on the FW now is mount the rub rail and, finally, get her out on water. Hope this winter won't last long!

Wow that looks great! I never learned how to do upholstery, only went as far as replacing the backing wood panels. Soon it will be like new.

Hello! Thanks for the reply! This project started of as an engine rebuild but then, things got a little out of hand. If you rather see this thread in the restoration forum, feel free to move it over. As you can see, this project is near the finish line but there will be other projects to follow....Of course, I would like to post all the restoration projects but I don't know if you guys would appreciate it. Might be interesting though, but then, I am not a professional boat mechanic. At this moment, there are 5 projects going on. All different "small" boats that need work and love. The youngest is the FW.... Let me know what you think?

Hello boaters!
Finally, the weather got better over here. Time to continue the work I started almost 2 years ago. However I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
So, time for a small update on the progress made so far.
I spent a lot of time on the paint. There was to much "texture" in the paint.
Rubbed it all down again and polished the surface to a near mirror glaze.
Next up was the new rub rail. The old one was badly corroded.
Hope you all like what you see?...
The next update will follow once I got here in the water!

I got her in the water


But, this is as far as I got.
Engine started immediately but died a minute later.
Got the fuel pump running manually, filled the carb and it started up.
One minute later it died again.
So, made a electrical bridge on the fuel pump relays to have the pump running constantly. Unfortunately, even than the engine runs for a minute or so. Loaded her back on the trailer and drove home.
Next I ordered a new fuel pump.....

Do you have a Rochester or Holley carb?
2 or 4 bbl?
I have the 4bbl Quadrajet and have had to rebuild it a few times. Original mechanical fuel pump lasted about 30 years!

It is a Rochester 2 barrel carb. Had a Holley 2 barrel but it was completely coroded inside ( pic ). The fuel pump is the electric low pressure type. Since the carb was badly corroded, I imagine the pump took in some water as well?
Checked the pick up tube in the tank and is OK. No water in the tank.
The engine ran great last year, remember? Had it running on ear mufs for 15 minutes or so.
But that was last year of course.

Ah yes I remember it ran fine last year. So when it stalled did you pump the throttle with the flame arrestor off and see that there was no fuel being squirted into the throttle bores? For sure that would point to a carb or fuel pump issue.
I would probably check for spark anyway, just to be on the safe side. Does yours have the old style points distributor or the newer electronic style?
I have the points on mine, I've had to replace them a few times, when I get the boat ready for each season I always check them, if they are pitted then I replace them. Then check the gap, re-verify with a dwell meter, then set timing and idle speed. Dwell angle is 39* + or - 2* and timing is set at 6* BTDC. Centrifugal advance on these V6s was supposed to add 12* at 3200 rpm for a total of 18* which is low compared to the V8s but that's how OMC set them up.
I have gone back and forth with carbs. My original was the Quadrajet. After I did the top end overhaul, it ran fine initially then the old Q-Jet started acting up. I had recalled from my youth (late 60s to early 80s) that the Quadrajet was considered to be complex for beginners to rebuild and I mistakedly assumed it was too old to rebuild so I replaced it with a brand new Holley 4160, calibrated for the V6 engines.Well it never ran right, I tried everything the Holley tech support guys suggested. In frustration I took the old Q-Jet off the shelf, watched a couple of videos on how to take it apart and in 2 hrs it was done. Bolted it on and it ran 100% better than the Holley! The Holley 4160 sat on the shelf in my garage for about a year then I got curious and took it apart. Found nothing until I removed the secondary bowl and found loose clutch bolts on the secondary metering plate. This is likely what caused all the trouble I had with it, because that introduced extra unmetered fuel into the primary bores causing an excessively rich fuel mixture. I still have it sitting on the shelf!
And I am a big fan of the Quadrajet now. Got better parts and rebuild kit for next time.

Would have liked a Quad barrel carb, brings some extra HP. However, that would be in strong contradiction with the boat's name! No?

In the USA we say speak softly but carry a big stick (Theodore Roosevelt). So if you get a chance go for a 4 bbl it will bring it up to 205 hp from 175.
