My mother, who absolutely loves fishing, has a 14' aluminum boat with a '78 Evinrude motor. The motor runs beautifully but is getting more difficult for her to start. I am not certain where to begin looking, but I was hoping someone here could help me. Please email me if you know where I can buy a new/used electric starter for her boat. My email is diehl_jesse@yahoo.com. Thank you very much.

First of all, this is not a parts swap board, so that won't work.

Someone could however refer you to a parts source, but first we will need a bit more info.

horsepower of motor?
model number of motor?
serial number of motor?

While most mid sized motors can be converted to electric start, many smaller motors can not.
And while a starter conversion may be possible, there is the secondary question of a charging system to keep the battery charged.
Lastly, this won't be cheap if new parts have to be bought. It may be wiser to buy a new(er) motor that is equipped with electric start.

An alternative, depending on finances, size of waters boated, ease of use, etc, may be to buy a large transom mounted trolling motor, and two deepcell batteries.

Get back to us with your motor specifics.

Re: Looking for electric starter for '78 Evinrude

thank you for your reply. The motor is a 1978 Evinrude 25hp -- model number 25802c -- serial number e0004647. The boat is used in small MN and IA lakes and is in very good shape. Finances are a little tight, so a new motor seems to be out of the question. But, that does beg the question -- what does a new 25hp motor cost these days? I have not really looked anywhere primarily due to the boat being in such good shape. I am very appreciative for any information you, or anyone, is willing to share with me. Thanks again.

Jesse Diehl
