Re: Looking for expert prop advice

Irv,

I keep wondering about added a whale tale to the motor to help hole shot.

With my tracker pro deep v17 with 90 hp it made a night and day difference.

This Lowe is a better hull and I am hesitant to try it. It might help though.

DeepV, I have never used a whaletail so I don't know for sure? I have heard they work but cause some other minor problems? When I was originally posting about props sometime ago, it was suggested to me by a few folks on here to get trim tabs? I assume it is good advice but I have never seen an aluminum boat such as ours with them on before so I am hesitant on the purchase of them? I am hoping I can get what I am looking for with just a decent prop.
Do a search on here, type in "Whaletail or Trim tabs" and you will find the debate on the 2, some great info on both options but from what I remember reading, tabs were the way to go. ........Irv964
(I just found this in the "Boating topics and questions" section do your search in there and you will finds tons of info.. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=255395 )

Don't waste your money on a hydrofoil stabilizer. If you want better hole shot, either raise your motor one or two holes or drop to a 17 pitch prop. It's pretty much as simple as that.

What exactly am I looking for as far as engine height goes? Where should the cav plate be in relation to the bottom of my hull? I am going away on holidays tomorrow and will be gone for some time so hopefully I can find this thread when I return? I also think I am going to try a Turning Point Hustler 19P aluminum if it comes in by tomorrow? I have heard great things about them and it may just provide the added extra holeshot that I am looking for?
Everything that I have researched shows me either a 18 or 19 P prop? I guess it mostly has to do with it being a 4 stroke and it has a 2:33 gear ratio. The 17 I believe will over rev my engine to much and reduce my top speed significantly? Thanks for the input........Irv964

KP,

Thanks for the input. That is what I am thinking now too. The whale tail worked on my Tracker but I really believe it was a band aid for a less than desirable hull design.

I need to get my 20 hour check done soon and I will try and raise one hole and test it.

The cavitation plate should be even with or up to 2" above the bottom of the boat. Sometimes higher. Each bolt mount hole equals 3/4" raise and will result in approximately 100 to 150 RPM increase. How high you can go with your motor height really depends on the prop.

Originally you were looking at stainless props and now you're considering a Hustler? Don't waste your time, it's not as good a prop as the Black Max you have now. If you haven't raised your motor, you should consider going up one or two holes. That should provide the hole shot and top speed you are seeking.

If you switch to stainless, you need to look carefully at the various designs. Some stainless props loose thier effective performance after 5500 or so RPM. But they'll have great hole shot. Other have good high RPM performance at the cost of hole shot.

Sorry to inform you K.P but the Turning Point Hustler prop that I purchased is way better than the stock Black Max that came with my boat! (I purchased the same size diameter and pitch, 13.25 X 19P)
I reached my max rpm of 6000 and the Black Max would only reach 5700-5800rpm max, I gained 2mph on my speedo, my cavitation in the turns is way less, and my holeshot has increased considerbly! I would highly recommend this prop to anyone!
I will never know if the Stiletto prop would have better but with these results I don't see how? I have completely forget about about a SS, especially considering the price difference of approximately $300.00 dollars. I am a true believer in Turning Point props now........Irv964
