I just recently put a newer four stroke Johnson 200hp on my CC and although I was aware of the wieght difference from the older 200 Merc I had, I now am second guessing myself and wonder if I should have went with lower HP...
The hull is a Hyrda sport vector 20' from early 90's and is solid and had it for many years now. The boat is rated up to 235 HP but Im sure the weight guidlines used then to create load limits didnt account for 600lb motors. Ive been doing the math on almost every item and know I have reduced my persons capacity... back to the question, would this boat have been better off with a 150hp?? I was afraid I'd be unhappy with the drop in power. the first motor was an older 225 evinrude, then a 200 merc, now back to johnson.. Any opinions??

Re: looking for feedback/opinion....

Welcome to the forums,

To choose a 150 or 200 will depend entirely on the type of boating you want to do to, if you like to go out heavily loaded, with full passengers capacity go for 200, less loaded with less passengers go for a 150 and I mean all the time. A pity that you cannot test boat with different engines to match. Counting with 70% of the max 225 rated, a 150 should perform well.

Happy Boating

Your boat was rated for outboard HP, lisport, not outboard weight. What you have now is like having a large guest sitting in the stern. I doubt that your boat cares.

how would you rate the boat's performance with your new Johnson .... if you are happy with it, that is all that matters .... hopefully it will serve you well

If your transom isn't straining under the weight, I wouldn't worry about it. Like somebody said, it's no different than having 1 extra 13 year old sitting in the back of the boat. What's the difference, anyway, 100-125lbs? I don't think you'd be 100% happy with the performance drop from the 200 you had back there to a new, 150 4-stroke.

Re: looking for feedback/opinion....

I've heard many people who went with a lower HP motor and wish they'd have gotten a larger one, but can't recall anyone wishing they'd gone with a smaller motor.
