Looking for help 89 merc 90hp

I have a 89 Mercury 90hp. The issue I have is I will be riding fine out on the water then all of the sudden the motor sputters and the rpms go way down I throttle down put it in neutral and it idles fine. I try to start going again and it seems like its misfiring then suddenly its up to plane again out of no where. Any help would be much appreciated.

I6 or 4 cylinder? I had an I6 that would run itself out of gas at WOT if I stayed there for a few minutes. Rerouted the fuel line from the tank and it solved the problem. Bought the engine new and had it for 7 years. Never had to do a thing ( think I changed the surface gap plugs once) so it could have been something needing attention in the engine.

I asked because the boat and engine were titled as '89 models but folks on here said that the last I6 came off the assy line in '88. Well that could be and still be sold as an '89.

It’s a 3 cyl I’ve gone that route changes the fuel line and bulb

check for spark on each plug when it is acting up.
