Looking for Hints/Tips on '88 Gamefisher Impeller & LU seal and gasket replacement

Hello,
I just received my replacement gasket/seal set and a new impeller. I'm going to start tomorrow morning on replacing the water pump impeller and all the seals and gaskets in the lower unit on a 1988 Gamefisher 9.9 hp engine. This engine is new to me and I believe it has sat for a year or 2.

I have a repair manual on CD and plan on printing the pertinent pages before I start for reference.

Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated before I open up a bucket of worms.

FYI. I saw grayish water coming out of the weep holes (below the cavitation plate) when I had it running with the previous owner. This is why I went and bought the gasket/seal set. Is there something else I should look for? Obviously I will be checking out the Water pump housing.

Should I add a tell tale while I'm at it?

Carb and Fuel pump rebuild next week!

Good luck with that manual, they are not very good.

If the grey water was coming from a weep hole, it may just be seepage from the midsection or the motor.

THe lower unit should be sealed, and has no weep holes.

You should really drain the lube and examine it, may save you from doing the seal job.

I'd add a telltale, just for peace of mind, but don't know how you would do it on that motor. It doesn't have a conventional thermostat or housing, or a pipe plug that I know of.

Well, the lower unit is off and I am trying to get the propeller shaft bearing cage off. Any idea what size the bolts need to be for the puller? They are not very big. The manual doesn't say. Special tool T-8948-1 is what they suggest to use. Have to push against shaft and pull two bolts with Special tool T-8948-1.

The lubricant from the lower unit was pretty clean. Not clear but not grey either. it is a few years old at least. Don'y think any water intrusion. Will check for metal shavings with a magnet.

I have the unit off, might as well replace the seals while it is available.
