Hi I am thinking about purchasing a 1989 Bayliner Capri with the 2.3L I/O Ford motor. This would be a restoration project. I don't think it has been covered or stored very much judging from the condition of the interior. The owner says it has a small soft spot in the middle of the aisle and that he bought a new battery and starter last summer. I am going to go look at it sometime this weekend, and am going to take it out for a spin to see what I will be dealing with. I am also going to check the compression. Anyone know what the compression should be around? Also what all should I be looking at when I inspect this boat. Thanks for your input!!

Not sure about the compression on that motor, but. . .

If the interior is as bad as you say it is, you've got a 99% chance of having not only a bad floor and bad foam underneath, but rotted stringers and transom, too. These boats weren't exactly built like a brick outhouse, if you know what I mean (not bashing the brand, I own one).

Since you are taking a sea-test, punch the throttle. You should get up on plane quickly. Sluggish performance means you have an extra 500lbs of water under your floor, among other things.

Look at the water that ends up in the bilge. If it's dark and murky, it could be from flowing through rotted foam and wood. And don't be afraid to yank up part of the floor, and/or run a tiny drill bit through for a "core sample".

Honestly, man. . .if the floor is shot and the interior is shot, on a 1989 Bayliner, you're basically looking at what should be a sub-$1000 boat.
