Howdy, DHadley.

It seems to me that if Wal Mart is mentioned as a source, iboats should be considered as well.

Who knows what sort of volume deal a retailer might be able to negotiate for the kinds of boater's supplies iboats does carry?

Why do you object to iboats being considered?

don't forget throw away rain suits/jackets/poncho's/hats/ sun blocker/ family radio set walkie talkies. Iboats probaly has a wholsale tax exempt purchasing department that jb is refering to. Seachoice might sell to you, but iboats might be a neccesary and better choice for items. unless you plan to buy everything for boats by the dozen.case load.

Rental toys-might be a liability risk. when the fools drown on the deleware the relatives always sue the outfitter of the canoe.

Might have overlooked it but how about a seat cushion? The floating type, in Michigan you must have a throwable life saving device on board, a boat seat cushion qualifies.

DougV>

Hah... here's a good one... dogfood. I don't know how many times we've headed to the lake with food fit for a king and his family, and not have given the dog a second thought, and end up having to feed the animal high grade human food. She is so unworthy, but I can't see her go hungry either.

Stainless steel fastners, screws, nuts, bolts, and fender washers. Oh, and cotter pins. A couple of wheel hubs in standard sizes and spare bearings and dust caps or bearing protectors as well.

Thom

Charts for the lake if available
Small assortment of magazines & paperbacks

From your posts I see that the item that will do you and boaters the most good - - Well that is unless the motor won't start - - is already is on your list. And that is cheery customer service - - Won't cost you a dime & will pay off big in the long run. Sad that so many retailers have forgotten about that one.

Just a tip: Don't run out of bait on the busy weekends, holidays or the opener. That's one thing that really gets me. Bait Store = bait. I can't tell you how many places I've been and of course they say: "We're out right now but the bait truck is going to be here this afternoon." Great. After that, I generally avoid that store.
Just a personal experience.
Hope it goes well.
Dman

Be careful. Don't sink your store with too much inventory that you can't move.

THe one thing that I didn't see above, replacement winch strap.

If you sell batteries, you will have to keep them charged, or they won't be of any use to a customer.

Buy wholesale if at all possible. Your tackle suppler/sales rep may handle may of these boating items, or can put you in touch with someone that does.

Always compare prices from wholesaler, to retailers like WalMart, iboats, or others. For small quantities of specific items, it may be cheaper to pick them up at a mega retailer.
Maurice Sporting Goods is one of the largest wholesalers around, with exclusive sales contracts for many companies. Take a look.
http://www.msgb2b.com/msgb2b/home.asp

correction: they are the largest in the world.

Starting to look like a West Marine with a bait shop/conv store in the corner :D

All good idea's for what to stock. And your not going to be buying in great volume on any. I've worked in a couple marina's selling the goods. And was screaming while reading until they were mentioned.

JohnMc
those cheap styrofoam coolers that can be used once and if it doesn't survive, oh well
From my own fishing / hunting we buy at least two a year!

vista4u2
Hah... here's a good one... dogfood. I don't know how many times we've headed to the lake with food fit for a king and his family, and not have given the dog a second thought,
Biggie: And if you only sell canned dog and cat food your also going to sell them a can opener.
In either case they are most likely going to buy a stack of those paper bowls to put the food/water in and on salt water a bottle or two water for the family pet.

CapnMike
If you go beyond the basic fishing tackle, have some "specialized" lures that really work in your lake....we fishermen will buy anything we think might work.
No truer words ever said. And if its two guys going out together you will sell two of each lure!

But in my not so humble opinion.. vist every bait/conv store on all the lakes around you and be up front.. look at what they stock and ask for thier advice. Like IBOATS you will get alot and if your not competing with them the advice will be like here (honest)

Wow didn't know I was going to write a book tonight :)

Customer service and having things in stock!
Be aware of what they are looking at and always ask if they have everything before heading out. And make good suggestions. Do you need Dip for the chips, sun screen for the little ones etc. It will make their day better if they did forget something. $10.00 extra bucks doesn't mean nothing for a day on the lake. But upselling 10 bucks when 200 people come through in a day means a extra 2000 gross at the end of that day.
Your getting into what can be a very fun business. Helping fellow boaters and still making a living doing it.

Luck to ya
And keep us posted.. good and bad.
What a great adventure to head into :)

kozman01,
Sounds like your talking about a pretty small place so maybe just the basics is all you'll be able to carry. The first thing that came to mind was that you should try to carry all the boating safety things required in Ohio. Then I'd go with the things that are commonly forgotten, lost or broken by boaters/fishermen. Things that can put an end to a boaters/fishermans day. Law enforcement won't allow a boater to launch or will send them back to shore with fine if they don't have everything aboard that the law requires. The basic/most common fishing tackle used on the lake would be good to go along with your bait. Don't forget a cheap rod and reel or two. You'll probably learn a lot about what's needed just from people asking for it.

Re: Looking for items to stock in a store for boaters...

I would pick my selection of stock based on what other stores are near you. If a marine store is 3 miles away, I wouldnt stock too many items, as most people will go there. Also depends if those stores are open on the weekends.

Also, dont charge insanely high prices for boat items cause that may get one purchase, but the next time, they wont forget, lest they pay your high prices again.

Above all, if you carry boat items, advertise it on the side of your store.

Ken
