My boat mechanic has had my boat for a year because a prop shaft was bent then he later discovered the lower end case is bent because the old and new carrier bearing will not fit. I need help looking for the lower end (empty) case for my 1996 Chris Craft Concept 18 with a Volvo Penta 5.0FL 502APNCA. The outdrive is a 1996 Volvo Penta Cobra SX Product 3868389, S/N T0803093, 1:66 Ratio. Mechanic said he has been looking for year. I would look but I am confuse on the various OMC/ VP crossover, match up.... stuff. If you have info or know an expert in Sacramento Ca. or anywhere in the world please let me know. I love my boat and it is beautiful except it needs to be repaired.

Finding an empty lower will be hard. Luck of the draw so to speak. Fortunately, there are several complete used lowers on eBay and CL. Pull everything out, put your new in. Not hard. Not one-year. Part No. 3855695 or 3855363. This lower is used on a few drives.

Thank you. Does the ratio need to be 1:66 like mine is or is that in the upper unit ?

For this drive, the lower covers two ratios for 6 of the 8 offered. In your situation, the lower covers 1.66 and 1.97. The answer depends on exactly what new stuff has already been purchased. Are you sure the housing’s bent? That’s a heck of hit, and if it was run post, there has to be metal/debris throughout both the lower and upper and all of it suspect.

Hi Nash: I was skiing at 38 mph, and sister hit a rock that was a couple feet under water. The shaft was visible bent, and measured more than 2" out. We are lucky to be alive. The housing is bent because the carrier bearing, new or original will fit in. Its slightly out of round. Just water in the oil because I had to drive back to the launch ramp. Thank you for your expertise. I really miss my boat. We have been together trouble free for 25 years.
