I've been running my old stuff for many years now so it's time to upgrade and was wondering what's out there that's been tested and approved by you guys in the $6-700 price range? I spend most of my time fishing the ocean in 50-300 ft. of water. Occasionally deeper. Mostly Salmon, halibut and bottom fish. I've done lots of reading, but would like to hear from the ones that use them regularly with likes and dislikes.

I don't know about anything in that price range, but I have a low price Humminbird and it is very well built and has great reviews. I am taking it out for the first time Sunday. I'd say if this finder, being in the $100 range, looks and works as well as folks say, their more expensive ones must be awesome.

My recommendation would vary depending on if your interested in a rock solid, commercial quality machine or one that makes you-tube videos and double as a gaming device when not fishing. :D

It all depends on what a "rock solid, commercial quality machine" cost. Which are you speaking of? I don't need a toy. I want a unit that is user friendly, has a decent display and is dependably. I'm not interested in most of the bells and whistles they have on them. For the money I mentioned, I would think there's one out there, I was just looking for a little push in the right direction by someone who has one something like I'm looking for and loves it.:)

n that price range you have 3 options. If you don't mind a monochrome display you can pick up a old, new stock Furuno LS4100 for roughly $300 plus the cost of a transducer of your choice, figure another $100-125.

Moving up a rung, you should be able to find a used Furuno FCV 582L for $600-700 plus the cost of a transducer. I use one as a backup unit

The third unit to look at is the Sitex SVS-650. I've seen them anywhere from $550-650 plus transducer. I ran it's predecessor the CVS 106MKii for years and really liked the unit

You'll hear from the peanut gallery how hard these units are to operate. Anyone who has spent 5 minutes getting acquainted with the unit will tell you otherwise. Just how hard can it be to turn a knob?

This looks like a good deal for my use. I can live without color. Thanks Dingbat.

Just remember that a color chart is easier to interpret quickly than a monochrome one.

I've never used one or seen one in operation. How does color help?

You are used to seeing the world in color; charts are miniature representations of that world. The close the resemblance, the easier for the brain to interpret the information.

He will not be seeing charts on any of these units. Sounder only. ;)
