Re: Looking For New Seats

My boat is wrapped up for the winter, but I tore the old seats out and tossed them the day I wrapped it up (call it forced-motivation). So I bought two six foot 2 x 12's. My original plan was to glue them down with LOTS of 5200, lengthwise to the floor. The pain them, and bolt the bases right to it. Two questions came to mind:

1) My floor is a thin layer of fiberglass on not-so-great plywood. There's no holes in the floor or anything, but it is a little soft in a few areas. So it got me thinking, if I sanded all the paint off the floor, down to bare fiberglass. Could I have someone just slop down a fresh layer of fiberglass, right on top of the old one, and on top of the two boards? Then I'd have my solid surface for mounting the new seats, and a nice fresh floor that should last me another 10 years or more. Thoughts?

2) I know someone that welds. I'm wondering if I should get him to put larger bottom plates on the seat bases. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking it's like an 8" x 8" square-ish piece. I could probably have him stick a 12 x 12 base piece on there instead. The idea being that it would be more stable, and less likely to tear itself out of the floor when you hit a big wave. I actually already plan on having him weld a hook to each base so I can bungie coolers and stuff in place. So adding some plates might not be a huge deal.
