I recently bought a 1977 Silverline fiberglass v-hull bowrider. Motor is a 1977 Evinrude 140hp. It came with an aluminum 12.75" x 21" prop which the seller said he had laying around and just tossed on it. Apparently he bought it as part of a going out of business sale and it didn't have a prop on it.

I had it out for the first time last night and if the tach is to be believed, it was turning about 4900 - 5000 rpm at 29mph. Speed was checked using a gps. This thing definitely need a new prop, but as I don't want to end up with 3 different props I'm hoping someone can give me a good suggestion for what I should buy. I'm planning on using the boat for joy riding and a fair amount of water skiing. Thanks for your time everyone.

Have you done a compression check on that engine????
Depending on the size of that boat and the weight, a 17P may be close, and yet, if the engine can be raised quite a bit yet, a 19P may work. Tell us a bit more about the boat and the general condition of the engine.

I haven't personally compression checked it, the seller said it was in the 120 - 125psi range. He's an auto mechanic so I figure he knows what he's doing. The motor does have a problem in that after running it for about 10 minutes it lost a fair amount of power, wouldn't climb past 2500 rpm. Then it sputtered and died at idle as I was bringing it into the dock. As this boat sat in storage for 20+ years before being sold and the feel of it as it was slowing down I'm inclined to think it's a dirty filter / carbs problem. It going into the local OMC dealer next week for tuneup.

Heh, I see I missed a couple questions there. The specs I found for the boat say it weighs around 1230lbs dry and has a bow depth of around 48". Beam claims to be 82". The motor is currently bolted directly to the transom at the top hole. This looks to put the anti-ventilation plate about even with the bottom of the keel, maybe a little below it.

OK, I don't like the sound of how it acted coming in...if it hadn't run for that long, a complete carb job, water pump replacement are a must, and there are several other items that should be looked at setting that long..the T-stats may have stuck closed, and if the carbs are like I think they are after setting that long, we may have burnt a piston.
Compression check would be mandatory now. If they are not all within 5% of each other, we may need to pull the heads and do some looking.
It is of the utmost importance that the carbs come off and get rebuilt if the compression passes, and setting that long, all, and I mean ALL fuel lines will need replaced.
Note the type and P/number of the sparkplugs when removed for comp test.

The water pump and t-stats appeared to be working well. It certainly was spitting plenty of water. I've replaced the plugs already, the ones that were in it were a mismatched set of surface gap and conventional Champions. They all appeared to be valid plugs for the motor, just not all the same. The place I'm taking it to for the tuneup next week does a pretty thorough initial check so hopefully they can catch everything that needs to be done.

I cannot stress hard enough, that the waterpump needs replaced (should be done every 3 years in fresh, every other year in salt)and if the comp test passes, those carbs REALLY need to come off and be rebuilt. Please keep us posted...

Waterpump replacement was *very* high on the list of priorities and it's a standard part of the tuneup this place does. I don't think a carb rebuild is neccesarily standard, but I was going to tack it onto the list of things to do while they have it.

Now why would someone drag out a thread to tell us they bored out a 78 140-which is the same as the late 90's 110hp- to 155hp, which isn't possible-boring doesn't increase hp, it drops it.
60mph???? come on...this engine won't turn past 6400 because of the reeds...to hit 60 with an alum. 19P it would have to turn WELL over 7000rpm.
Go back under your rock and play with the crawdads......
