Usually use a slide hammer, last one I did broke the fingers of my large slide hammer. Ended up using the axle bearing puller with a fine thread 5/8" threaded rod and C channel to make a puller for more force than the 5 lb slide

Autozone has a great free tool rental program for these kind of tools that you do not use very often. They have a slide hammer and then the rear axel bearing puller attachment that you use together. Free loaner tool. That's what I always use.

I used a slide hammer that my boss loaned me. It used a "top hat" attachment that was just small enough to fit through the ID of the bearing; just feed it through, get the "brim" of the hat behind the inner race, and yank away.

Not sure if it was something he bought or something he made (or had made)... it's relatively easy metal lathe project if one has lathe (or machine shop) access.
