Looking for Rodbolts link and sync procedure

I found a link that mentioned a link by Rodbolt, that had a nice link and sync procedure, but after almost two hours of searching and reading through numerous posts, I can find it.

I have a 1989 Johnson 150 HP - Model Number J150STLCEM - and have only had it out once. Totally let my Grandson down, as he was all pumped up to go tubing.

The engine bogs down as soon as I get to 3000 RPMs and just bogs down. Dry gas, new fuel filter and carb rebuild still doing it. Had a friend for for a ride with me with the cowl off and he was able to get it up to full speed by playing with the linkages around the carb, and he said I need to do a link and sync from what he knows about marine engines. Thus my interest in trying to find your procedure.

thanks a bunch

I haven't see any of Rodbolts comments for a long time either. Wonder what happened to him?

dc095 - I will. I have a Johnson repair manual ordered, but that doesn't help me in working to get the boat running right so my Grandson out tubing.

Re: Looking for Rodbolts link and sync procedure

Here's what I found on another site regard "link and sync":

Default Re: link and sync carbs 1982 115 hp

If needed, back off the cam so that it is not touching the throttle cam roller. adjust the throttle linkage between the carburetors so that the butterflies open and close at the same time. Adjust the throttle cam roller so that the scribe mark on the cam makes contact and just starts to open the throttle butterflies when that scribe mark is dead center with the roller, not before or after.

Unless you have changed the measurement between the vertical throttle arm and the cam, that should do it. If however you have changed that adjustment, the idle timing should be set as stated in your service manual when the cam is centered with the roller by putting that adjustment where it belongs (whatever that timing is).

A bit of mistake in that adjustment if remembering right.
Idle timing is not a fix, but pick-up timing is the most important. That is the point(timing advance) when the roller hits the mark on the cam and the carbs starts to open.
Timing at idle will be what it gets when the correct idle rpm, boat in gear forward moving freely, is set.
