I don't think those model lengths include the outboard hanging out the back. Good luck with the garage.

That is a good point. The KeyWest 1720 is 17'2". That only leaves what 2'4" for the motor and trailer tongue to fit in your 19'6" garage. That might not work.

What about these swivel tongues to reduce trailer length?

An '08 Lund 1750 foot Fisherman on Shoreland'r trailer with swing-away tongue and 115hp four-stroke Merc hanging on the transom measures in at 19 feet 5 1/2 inches. We also wanted to make sure it fit in the garage.

That is good information.

For reference the Lund 1750 is 17'6".

I suppose it depends a little bit on the trailer design. However, a swing away tongue will really help.

I'm not sure what marinas you've been looking at, but around here I could find several boats that fit your criteria.

It would really help if we knew where you were. Please consider putting your location in your profile. You mentioned Lake Huron, so I assume either east / north Michigan or Ontario; I'm in SW Michigan (Kalamazoo area). If I looked at marinas close to Lake Michigan, all I'd find are big-water boats that definitely won't fit in a normal garage. In an area of smaller inland lakes, lots of marinas carry 16' - 18' boats. One type not mentioned yet would be a 16' jet boat. 15 years ago lots of manufacturers were in that market, but now it's mostly Sea Doo, Sugar Sand, or a couple others. Boston Whaler also makes some boats in that size range that might fit your bill.

Anyway, look at marinas away from the big water, in middle-class areas with lots of smaller lakes, and I'll bet you find what you want. Are there any boat shows near you? I'm not talking the big coliseum size show, but small ones at the regional mall, or an end-of-season sellout with several local marinas.

Finally, over spring and summer months, get off the highway and drive around the lakeside streets near you. I'll bet you can find several for sale over time. We bought ours that way -- parked by the road around the lake with a 'for sale' sign. Made good friends with the couple we bought it from, too.

Re: Looking for Runabout 16-17 ft Max.

Thanks for all the replies. You all have been very helpful.

I live in the Detroit area, but with a more useable boat, I will spend 1/2 my trips on Lake Huron (perhaps Saginaw Bay to the Oscoda area). I have boated the local inland lakes for years, so Im bored with it. I like the open water, rougher conditions, opportunity to see something new, etc of the Great Lakes. Having said that, my standards for a boat are quite low, given that my experience on Huron is with my 15ft Saftmate....

Thanks.

I've got a 16ft deck boat with OB and trailer in my 20 ft double car garage...and there is no way it fits unless I park it diagonal. With it parked diagonal I have an extra 5+ feet or so...

Re: Looking for Runabout 16-17 ft Max.

I just had a few more comments.

The small jetboats that were mentioned don't really fit the bill for big water. My experience has been that they have low freeboard and very low bows that would like to cause the boat to submarine under waves.

I also wanted to post a link to the Scout Dual console option in the 17' range. This one is 17' 5" and only 1240 lbs.

Good luck with the search. I am sure you will find something you like.

Thanks, RotaryRacer. I guess I didn't make myself clear. We've got a small jetboat, as do a couple of friends. We would never consider taking ours onto Lake Michigan (closest to us) unless it was a very rare dead-calm day -- and even then I don't think I would. However, that type of boat does meet a couple of his objectives.

As I understand atengnr, he's got 3 objectives:

1) Boat and trailer have to be short enough to fit in his garage, so probably 16' - 18' max.
2) Boat and trailer must be light enough (< 2500#) so he doesn't have to upgrade his tow vehicle.
3) Boat should be ok on big water (Lake Huron or Lake Sinclair).

Goals 1 and 2 are quite compatible.
Goals (1+2) are not very compatible with goal # 3. The best compromise might be a Whaler type of boat.

atengnr may need to weigh his objectives and see just what trade-offs or compromises he's willing to take. As I recall, there hasn't been much said yet on costs, and that could be a big factor, too.

atengnr, not sure where in Detroit area you are, but you might look around marinas in the NW metro area west of Pontiac, between Keego Harbor and Sylvan Lake to Waterford and west to Hartland. Because there are lots of small inland lakes around there, they would more likely have something along the lines you're looking for. (It's been over 33 years since we lived in that area, but I can't think they've changed that much).

Re: Looking for Runabout 16-17 ft Max.

If room is tight a swing away tongue is the only way to go they are very nice and can save 3-4" depending on trailer design. If you found something that was perfect but didn't have the swing away tongue, any decent welder/fabricator could handle it for you might cost a little bit but your possibly talking the difference between being totally satisfied or simply setteling. That is more your call but I would do whatever I had to and get exactly what I wanted you will be happier in the long run.

Thank you for the replies. Im going to shop a bit at the Detroit Boat Show. I hope this will help give me an idea of what my options are...
